Rank

Postby The Neon Peon on Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:55 pm

I made 122 doodle 1v1s (flat rate), and joined quite a few quads games with noobs against high ranked teams (winning 2 total, I believe), and plenty of other games on a map and settings I suck at. (not to mention a few doodle assassins and a couple of 1v1 freestyles against people I know are better than me at them)

The result: I drop from colonel to private 1st class (and now up a bit because some of the quads games finished)

An interesting thing now. At least half a dozen people (not naming anyone) whom I normally play with have foed me, because I am a low rank with the skill of someone who can stay easily at colonel. It really opened my eyes: I would have never guessed that some of them cared about their points.

Seems odd to me. I don't mind going down for a terminator tourney because I was getting targeted and going back later. Who cares if I join 20 doodle assassins and drop to major? I know I can get up to colonel if I want to join some 2500+ game on a nice map and settings <- that's the only reason I ever try to keep my score at someplace.

Why do some of the rest of you keep your points at some rank? I don't see any advantages to it other than being able to join 2k+ or 2500+ games.

Some people have goals that they are looking to achieve; usually involving obtaining a personal best or simply climbing the leaderboards. If you as a Colonel in a Corporal's body join against other Colonels, well that is a direct obstacle to them achieving their goals. I would say just don't join against people who care about their ranks until you get back up so you don't screw them over. That should settle the foe issue.

I don't mind being foed, there are plenty of people on CC to play. I just found it interesting about how some people I did not think cared about their rank actually do. Nice bit about the goal part; it makes more sense now.

Maybe this will explain it:

To train them is my cause
I will travel

Searching far and wide

It's you and me
I know it's my destiny
Pokemon!
Ooh, you're my best friend
In a world we must defend
Pokemon!
Our hearts so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I'll teach you
Pokemon
Gotta catch 'em all!

Every challenge along the way
With courage I will face
I will battle every day

If you keep your rank high enough, it's easier to play with more highly skilled people, as opposed to playing against lower ranks who do stupid moves and/or suicide more commonly. That's why I like to stay a Captain. Being a lieutenant is fine to, but it's harder to get people around my rank to join my games, I find.

Rank is a funny thing really. There must be some psychology to it as well I think. Point in fact, although we have never played against or with each other (to my knowledge anyway) I know a couple of days ago I saw your name by a post and went "whoa, what happened?" And I know that I have had the question asked of me by dubs partners and players familiar to me (80% of whom have never visited the forums I'm sure) when a couple of weeks ago I was a captain and suddenly I'm at sarge or lower "what happened to you" (chuckle chuckle, laugh laugh).

Truth is? Stings a bit. Ego and all (for me at least). But I think I'm growing to like CC's ranking system. It is better (in my estimation at least) then game to point based scores. I like the RISK. I've beaten a brigadier general and I've lost to a cook and my points have reflected the success and the failure. And then, in the end, as you note above, we each have to settle with it.

I've been enjoying CC far more getting to know other players, learning new maps and types, and experimenting with strategy and styles than I did with the frenetic pace I was keeping before. But as someone mentioned above, we all have different goals and hats off to that.

Cheers for your post.

I agree with a lot of this post.

My rank has fallen lately and at times I feel embarrassed - mainly in games with high ranks - but then I remember I used to be equal to them, so it's cool.

Then I play games with friends that have terrible ranks and I lose sometimes and lose 50 points at a time, but it doesn't bother me, because really, who gives a f*ck? It is a game (the normal response I hate, but really. It is online risk. I can rise in rank as far as I can rise. If I can't get above that, well, then, might as well have some fun rather than playing the same map over and over.

1. If you want to play the best players you can then you have to be able to match their rank.

2. If you want to get invites from the best players (or invite the best players) then you really need to be sitting on page 1.

3. If you have already made it to the first page then you can (to an extent) drop a ton and still get invited (or be able to invite great players) for a while... but I think eventually you'll find yourself playing less top opposition over time.

4. High rank gives a poster 'more credibility' when posting about the game. Again, if one has already been at the top but de-ranked (say like Fitz, JR 24 etc etc) then their previous experience counts.

5. If you want to play for a top clan in the CLA or clan challenges then a good solid rank is surely a must.

Personally, once I feel I have reached my peak (though I am not sure what that is) I intend to just maintain at that level/retire/go do something else.

Personally, it's not the rank that I care about as much as it is winning. I'm competitive. I like to win. The rank and points are byproducts.

I care more about the rank of my teammates than my own, because I want my teammates to want to win just as bad as I do. However, if I have teamed with a player before and know that he/she is good from experience, I'll still invite him/her to games regardless of rank.

That being said, I've dropped off of page 1 for the first time in a month an a half, and it's effing killing me. The amount of shame I'm feeling right now is pretty irrational. It's amazing how after every new level of rank that you achieve, slipping back below it seems like the end of the world.

Out of curiosity, did you read the first post or just skim it over? I was not complaining about losing/winning games at all.

Blah blah blah, I play anyone, anytime, anywhere on any map or settings.
I'm here to have fun & play the game. Don't get me wrong, I keep track of my highest point total but that's just for me to see what I've done.
Also, I hate to lose, not because of points but because, well, I hate to lose. This is why I play most of my games in tourneys now. The competition is fun and you have a goal in front of you. I agree with you on the terminator settings. If I'm in a tourney where first one out is eliminated, I will take the loss to stay in the tourney. Screw the points! =D>
