Rule on sending PMs to other players....

Postby multilis on Sat Dec 05, 2009 5:30 pm

...I send a PM to the player asking them to check the game chat in whatever game it is. I do not repeat the truce offer or make any additional comments in the PM. I simply state "Please check the game chat in game xxxxxxx."...

Quoted from another thread.

this gives *some* potential for edge in negotiations. By being more aware of the in game diplomacy than other players, a group of 2 may be able to negotiate details out and surprise others who only notice when it becomes their turn... one can for example delay diplomacy till after enemy moves but still reach the ally who otherwise may have not looked in to notice until it was his turn. And thus he agrees right before your turn but too late for enemy and no one else knows about the PM edge.

Is the quoted strategy acceptable or illegal?

I find your name on this site oddly compelling.
...I prefer a man who will burn the flag and then wrap himself in the Constitution to a man who will burn the Constitution and then wrap himself in the flag.

How does it give an advantage if all is in the game chat? Please give an example.

yes, this is illigal, if your outset was to time your negotiations to just before the time you mentioned, then yes you are acting against the rules

Hi Sir Sebstar, I can't quite follow the bold bit. I believe, (but stand to be corrected) that you can post truce proposal in the game chat and then PM someone saying "pls look in the game chat." Obviously not discussing the truce in any way or sending a PM and then posting details in gamechat after the fact.

For my edification could you please give an e.g. as to how a PM saying "look in the gamechat" can gain an unfair advantage and / or is against the rules.

Cheers, Nipper

Example: Players 1, 2, 3, 4 take turns in order.

Player 1 goes first. He wishes to negotiate a deal with player 3 to gang up on 2 starting on player 1's next turn (Without a deal, player 3 may go after him rather than player 2).

With only in game negotiation, he might have to say something now, player 3 may only look at game when it is his turn. But instead he waits, knowing he can use PM to gain an edge by leaving 2 and 4 in dark. Player 1,2,3,4 all take their turns.

Rather than begin turn, player 1 in game messages 3 about a treaty to not attack each other till player 2 is dead. He then pm's player 3 to look at the game. Player 3 says in game "sure, I was planning to go after you but killing player 2 sounds good as well, I accept your treaty". Player 1 now begins his turn and launches all out attack on player 2, diverting forces that were guarding border with 3.

***

An alternative for player 1 would be to wait till after player 2 takes his turn, then place an in game message to players 3 *and* 4 with a more complex proposal. Then PM both 3 and 4, and succeeds in getting both of them to chat in game. Player 3 accepts the deal because player 4 is also around to sign treaty before player 3 moves, and player 2 never had a chance to counter offer before it is too late.

***

In both cases, the ones who send/receive PMs have edge over the ones that don't get a PM. The one sending the PM also has advantage that his enemy has less chance to counter diplomacy before deal is signed, enemy didn't get a PM.

Posting a proposal for a treaty in the game chat and then pming the person, telling them to check the game chat (and nothing more) is allowed. Negotiations must take place in the game chat, but telling someone to check the gamechat in the gamechat is rather silly and may be done by pm.

Since you are free to take your turn any time within 24 hours you can wait and try to negotiate before playing, though some would consider it bad form for making the other players wait.
