Clash of the Mega Clans

In a year that's seen a record number of clan challenges, the last great challenge of the year could become its most memorable, a heavyweight battle for the ages, eighty games pitting the top-ranked Horsemen of the Apocalypse (THOTA) against the third-ranked Spanking Monkeys (TSM). Popular interest in this challenge has been high, thanks to the stature of the clans and the personalities involved, and the public challenge thread reached twelve pages before the first game was created.
THOTA has been the top-ranked clan on CC during the ladder era and remains undefeated with a 7-0 record in challenges including 3 wins against top 10 clans. Fresh off a hard-fought 32-28 victory over the second-ranked Legends of War (LoW) and the overall victory in the first season of the Clan League, THOTA faces perhaps its toughest challenge yet.
Although the current ladder ranks TSM third behind LoW, the Monkis have earned their title bout with a 3-0 record, all against top ten clans. Many believe that TSM should be ranked 2nd after impressive 34-26 victory over second rank LoW in 2008. The Monkis' stated goal is to become the top-ranked clan on CC, and they're finally going to get their shot.
The clans kicked off the war a week early with a 2 game set, one home doubles game per clan, featuring four players that would appear on any knowledgeable CCer's list of the top 10 of all time: Former conqueror Scott-Land, and Seulessliathan for the Monkis, and former conqueror Blitzaholic (revered by many as the games best player), and Big Whiskey representing THOTA. The Monkis were opposed on their home map of Battle of Actium by artur1 and GloriousL, while clapper011 and Tisha battled the Horsemen on Conquerman.
While THOTA got off to a hot start, sweeping the kick-off pair and taking a 2-0 lead, that momentum has not carried into the first set of games. The Monkis reeled off three straight wins to go ahead 3-2, and the clans have since spent the last weeks exchanging the lead thanks to tightly-contested games between some of the best teams on CC. As of this writing, the monki's are up 17-14 including some second round games that ended fast; with neither clan taking more than a two-game advantage up to this point.
Most observers predict a very close first round, likely a 10-10 tie for the first round set, and a similar split looks possible for second round games; plus or minus a game or two. The second round of games, twenty in all, have been posted and filled in advance of the upcoming holiday season and its attendant schedule disruptions. The challenge will resume after the New Year, with two final sets of twenty games apiece.
Interest in this challenge runs high throughout cc, here are some comments by those watching from the stands:
