Clickable Maps

Postby StephenB on Sat Jan 02, 2010 11:06 am

Just now I was watching a Battle Royal and it's obvious that those using clickable maps have an extremly large advantage over those that don't. Not having them myself, this has really turned me off wanting to play a Battle Royal, because I know I won't win, despite being one of the better players in them. Chariot of Fire and alstergren said in Game Chat that they think clickable maps should be banned in BRs which I agree with.

I'm fully aware that clickable maps are open to the public, but a lot of people cannot install them for various reasons. I myself play CC from work and cannot install anything on my work computer. I'm also fully aware that there will always be some that are faster than others, but without clickable maps at least everyone has a fair chance and the difference between the fast and the slow won't be as big.

What are your views on this? It's probably a bit late to change anything now and I'm not even sure if it's possible to prevent anyone from using a script, but do you, like me, think it's unfair and shouldn't be allowed or do you enjoy the advantage it gives you and not really give a shit about those that don't use them?

How do you propose that they be banned? There's no feasible way since it's an open source script.

CM is not necessary for winning Battle Royales and certainly not sufficient. But it is helpful, and anyone who wants that same advantage is free to get the script themselves.

One of the BR's I won was without the help of Clickable Maps. It CAN be done.

I see a simple solution: code an automatic delay of say, 2-3 seconds after each action taken (assaults, reinforcements, deployments) for BR games.

This should level the playing field somewhat.

I do not programm the site and do not know how to disable them. If you can't prevent people using scripts then I suggest making it impossible to do more than one action every 3 seconds.

I watched three games. In all of them, very fast players (ManBungalow, karelpietertje and tdans) , who I would bet my account were using clickable maps, won.

Edit: Congrats h2sy!

And how fun would that be? 3 second delays man a game would take forever. i personally like to come up with a plan and execute it as quick as possible so i can get to another game, none of this snail trail rubbish. keep dreaming boys clickies ain't going anywhere :D maybe they should create snail games as an option like beside the speed and casual games for people who wanna spend all day taking there turns? i mean one action every 3 seconds type stuff, deploy 1 troop wait 3 seconds deploy 2 troops here another 3sec oh i'm sure it'd be very popular

A while ago lack had a poll about which updates to add to the site, and one of them was clickable maps. So I'm pretty sure it's on his short list of additions, and it would be a lot better to make the gameplay more friendly for everyone than to make it worse for people who prefer a clickable interface. Clickable interfaces are much more intuitive, easy to use and faster. They allow more variety of maps (huge number of territories, grid labeling, small labels) and overall are much more fun. I'm completely against additions to slow down CC users instead of additions to help everyone speed up.

Try reading at least the first post in a thread before posting in it.

This would be for Battle Royals only, simply because a lot of them were won by speed and not by skill. The Battle Royals were freestyle and wouldn't have taken any longer had there been a 3 second delay, it would've merely taken some people longer to take their turn in it.

Judging by the people that have posted in this thread, people don't really mind playing a game where the player with the better connection and faster computer has a huge advantage. I still think it's stupid but whatever.

Alternatively, they could set up a few standard BRs for those whose puters won't handle speed/fs settings, which would minimize the advantage of clickies on those games as well. Would a game last a while? Yes. Would it discourage freemies from those few games? Likely. Notice, tho, I'm not saying that all the BRs should be standard.

A sequential BR would take a ridiculously long time to get through. They already last a while as freestyle. A sequential one would never end.

Hecter's right. And the last however many people in the play order probably wouldn't have a chance to take their first turn.
