[Feedback] Game Layout II

Postby lackattack on Thu Jan 28, 2010 2:38 pm

As promised after the last update (although I'm a bit late - sorry!), I prepared a game layout mockup based on comments you've made. Here are the changes:

* moved the game settings & spoils back below the map
* shifted down the refresh & other toggle links
* shifted up the tournament title (there would be a speed game indicator over there too for non-tourney games)

Please vote on whether you like this better than what we have now. If you like neither, then please write a post with your feedback!

Thanks for your patience :)

Do we still get the option of where to put the stats?

I tested it in 1024x768 and I didn't find it worse than before. Could you elaborate please?

Sure, [side stats] is still there.

Yay! The layout mockup will be much more convenient for me.

Is there a reason why the player info/links/clock/etc are vertically aligned in the middle? Why not at the top?

To bring the countdown closer to the action panel.

If you do have a small screen and find it difficult to see the whole map & the rest of what you need during your turn, try hitting F11 while you're taking the turn. It makes the page go fullscreen and much easier to see everything. If you've already done this, and still can't see everything well, then..I'm sorry that's all I had for advice.

Overall the mock-up is much better, but the way you have the tournament title and link looks fairly sloppy to me.

its improvment, but its bad that you dont come to this topic, and that in work with people together find most suitabile solution, but again Mods its not interesting for Community work.

Agreed. The current method is better. Or it could be put right above the game chat.

In the mock-up, putting those small map/large map options vertically right next to the map could work better than the current horizontal method that just seems to stretch the page needlessly. Furthermore, splitting the game settings to two lines will cut down on the horizontal stretch as well. Build the lines so that it shows:

Map
Cards Held
Game Type/Initial Troops/Play Order
Spoils/Reinforcements/Fog of War

I may have been a bit hasty on my comment...and thinking of a past adjustment were to much vital information was located to the right of the map witch you could not see unless you scrolled over....nice site by the way....and hows the sequential medal going...lol

any chance the ratings can go back next to the name. knowing the rating of the player actually affects strategy quite a bit. if the button for stats is there, thats fine, but having to click on every name would be tough...and you really do need to know the rating as youre playing. Im assuming its not too hard, only because they were there before anyways

Hi Lack, to me the mock up looks better overall and would go with that in my view. ;)

This is fantastic for fixing the refresh problem. I don't always have access to BOB/clickies depending on where I'm playing from, and this really does look much better IMO. Awesome job lack! :)

I like it. Good job lack!

The spoils on the top is probably the only thing that's wrong with the current layout, and this new update would fix that. I say go with it.

Well it is better, but I don't like 2 things here:

1. Tournament label - looks really sloppy. Should be placed (for better look) above the game number (or below).
2. Game settings row. Very long, really hard to read, you actually need to read all the line to know if the game has flat rate or escalating. And you are wasting vertical space with that info.

For example, try to read next 2 paragraphs and answer how many $ a man yearns monthly.

Code: Select all
Name: John    Surname: Wilson   Occupation: Doctor   Salary: 1200$   Status: Divorced

---------------

Name: Lucy
Surname: Hampthone
Occupation: Manager
Salary: 1500$
Status: Married

And feel how much time you needed to find a correct answer. #1 - you need to read whole line to get to the right place. #2 - you need to read labels only, and when you've found correct one - you get the answer (and it is faster).

Also, it is harder to read lines than columns. And, as I said 2 months ago - it is hard to read a line without color/icon coding. If you want the data to be accessed quickly - you need to add some anchors so people can find them and orient more quickly. Right now the row looks dim and gray, hard to read. Add colors and icons - info will be much more accessible.

I can't draw the image right now, but if you need one for better understanding - I can provide it later.

Maybe you don't realize... the [toggle] links and all those game settings already wrap to multiple lines. I'm pretty sure the only thing that stretches the screen horizontally is the combination of the map width and the longest username in the players list.
