Nephilim

Nephilim.

Thoughts? Theories?

Simply a made up word by a Hebrew nomad looking for fame by a campfire?

What if it's not? What if there's mythology that's actually perverted history? And fallen angels came to earth from the heavens and produced titans with women and taught stuff to mankind that helped lead to ancient high technology and increased immorality?

I haven't seen the movie yet, but it sounds a bit interesting maybe?

I try to be serious most of the time I think? I believe my theory may be that it's a word that sounds nice sometimes?

Has anyone fancied the word Lilith more so than Nephilim?

If anyone were to ask me, I'd ask me, "I have?"

B.K. Barunt and I had a good debate on that in another thread. I'll look it up and post a link. The word "Nephilim" is from Hebrew "to fall", and is used 2 times in the Old Testament. One is Numbers 13:33 where they are a group of people in Canaan when the Israelites were getting ready to go in. The other is Genesis 6:4, a weird passage.
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Many take that to mean fallen angels mating with human women to create a race of giants. I lean toward a different scholarly interpretation that it has to do with the lines of Cain and Seth.

B.K. didn't think much of that view, and as usual wasn't shy about saying so, but through it all we pounded out the possibilities pretty well. Let me get the link.

Here it be: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=92261&start=15
The right answer to the wrong question is still the wrong answer to the real question.

Thanks Gringo.

Did anyone have a view that nephilim were simply the offspring of two groups of humans before the 4th century? Did Justin, Cyprian, Eusebius, Josephus, and Philo Judeaus not all consider the B'nai Elohim to be angels?

Also, who's referred to in Jude 6 and 2 Peter 2:4 and do you have any stance in regards to 1 Enoch or the Septuagint or the Antiquities of the Jews or the Book of Jubilees or the Book of Giants or the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs?

I saved words from the past and have moved stuff from another forum to here and I've replaced a name referring to a false deity with dashes in a quote below and one or both of these are misquotes even besides for all I know perhaps, but...

QUOTE:

The Book of Enoch was extant centuries before the birth of Christ and yet is considered by many to be more Christian in its theology than Jewish. It was considered scripture by many early Christians. The earliest literature of the so-called "Church Fathers" is filled with references to this mysterious book. The early second century "Epistle of Barnabus" makes much use of the Book of Enoch. Second and Third Century "Church Fathers" like Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origin and Clement of Alexandria all make use of the Book of Enoch. Tertullian (160-230 C.E) even called the Book of Enoch "Holy Scripture". The Ethiopic Church even added the Book of Enoch to its official canon. It was widely known and read the first three centuries after Christ. This and many other books became discredited after the Council of Laodicea. And being under ban of the authorities, afterwards it gradually passed out of circulation.

END

QUOTE:

Many of the early church fathers also supported the Enochian writings. Justin Martyr ascribed all evil to demons whom he alleged to be the offspring of the angels who fell through lust for women (from the Ibid.)-directly referencing the Enochian writings. -----------, writing in his work called Legatio in about 170 A.D., regards Enoch as a true prophet. He describes the angels which "violated both their own nature and their office." In his writings, he goes into detail about the nature of fallen angels and the cause of their fall, which comes directly from the Enochian writings.

Many other church fathers: Tatian (110-172); Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons (115-185); Clement of Alexandria (150-220); Tertullian (160-230); Origen (186-255); Lactantius (260-330); in addition to: Methodius of Philippi, Minucius Felix, Commodianus, and Ambrose of Milanalso-also approved of and supported the Enochian writings.

Have you considered that perhaps the word nephilim possibly was put in the book for a reason, maybe? We should all probably think on this.

I don't recall any "good debate" with daddygringo. I recall him repeating a jejune opinion which he refers to as "scholarly" and i refer to as theological pap. He finally resorted to playing fast and loose with the translation - pretty shoddy.

The word "nephilim" means "giant" in Hebrew. There were 3 races of giants before the flood, the Emims, the Zamzummins and the Anakhim. After the flood only the Anakhim are mentioned. Goliath and the other giants in Canaan were Anakhim or "sons of Anak".

According to Genesis 6:4, these giants were produced by angels who mated with women. The same reference is found in pagan mythology re the "titans", who were the offspring of "gods" and mortals.

Can you reccomend any sources on this? I am genuinely interested. This is quite different from what I have been told. (a lot of which can mostly be summed up as "we just don't know".) Feel free to pm me if you prefer.

Debating the origins, meaning or personal view of Nephlin is like debating and critiquing the script of Avatar. Sorry for pissing on your beliefs but your bantering about a book of hebrew fiction, fairy tales, and history.

Men wrote it,
Men rewrote it,
Men pick it apart and select specific parts of it to justify their actions.

God is a little pissed about it.

Do you not refer to 66 or more works by 40 or more individuals who lived hundreds and hundreds of years apart even if you are referring to the OT and NT alone? And how much has really changed in regards to the Tanakh if we can personally read from the LXX and Dead Sea Scrolls and they are about 2,000 years old?
