Okay, and again, let's say stuff gets produced in the US. What makes you think the drug cartels won't try to run those people out of business?Trephining wrote:If the US legalized all drugs, then cocaine could be produced in other places. Does the needed plant grow in Florida? Hawaii? I could easily see a country legalizing drugs just so they could be the sole supplier to the US.thegreekdog wrote:If the United States legalizes all drugs, the cartels will still maintain control of drug trafficking and the drug trade, at least until the drugs get to the United States (and even when the drugs are in the United States).
So, drugs get legalized. A guy starts a Drugs R Us in his hometown. He needs to find a supplier. Who is his supplier going to be? Well, the supplier will be someone overseas (i.e. where the drugs come from). So he'll sign a contract with some dude in Colombia who is probably a member or leader of a drug cartel. What if the rival drug cartel wants to be the supplier? Are they going to negotiate fairly with the Drugs R Us guy? Or are they going to try to steal the drugs or kill the other supplier? We're not talking about weed here; we're talking about heroin, cocaine...
My point is, the drug cartels aren't going to say "oh, drugs are legal now so we need to go do something else." I mean, how naive are you people?
The only thing that could possibly undermine drug cartels is the US military. I suspect if a big enough company became involved in the drug trade, and wanted it bad enough, they would have the US military step in to protect its industry.
Not to mention, if drug production in the US is legal, you can bet lots of producers would pop up to produce all the synthetics and grow all the natural ones that would grow for sure in the US (think mary jane, mushrooms, peyote, etc).

I understand what you are saying and how it could happen. I just don't think it would happen.PLAYER57832 wrote:Expense.thegreekdog wrote:

They will try, but when drugs are legalized, the profit margin drops significantly.
Exactly..PLAYER57832 wrote:Expense.thegreekdog wrote:

They may try in the beginning, but I don't think using violence is a sustainable free market strategy..thegreekdog wrote:I understand what you are saying and how it could happen. I just don't think it would happen.PLAYER57832 wrote:Expense.thegreekdog wrote:

Let's say you have a company that makes a brand new product. Now let's say a competitor comes up with a similar product. That's great. But let's say the first company starts killing off people at the second company. What's to stop cartels from doing this? And then raising prices? The federal government of course... how are they doing stopping cartels right now?

There's been a lot of news pushed by the agencies about legalizing or decriminalizing drugs. At least in Mexico. This will be of great help, but with the lack of education from parents this might be a disaster, as drugs will go down in price and "ni-nis" as they were coined by the UNAM director would end up their lives in disaster.GabonX wrote:They may try in the beginning, but I don't think using violence is a sustainable free market strategy..thegreekdog wrote:I understand what you are saying and how it could happen. I could be wrong.
Well I lived in Los Angeles, Mexico for 3 years. All I hear about the motherland is drug wars and other types of gang violence. The perception of Mexico in Cali is a government on the verge of collapsing. Chaos!nietzsche wrote:What is the perception of Mexico in the rest of the world?
What news about Mexico are being broadcast in another countries?
I'm gonna venture a guess that the main reason they are always pregnant is to have American-born children who are guaranteed citizenship, making it less likely that we deport them for being here illegally. That, and the fact that they probably get access to entitlements when they have children.Kid_A wrote:Well I lived in Los Angeles, Mexico for 3 years. All the Mexican women here are perpetually pregnant. Is it the same down there?

I think Kid_A is half joking with his commentary on Mexican procreation. Although he has manifested that you should apply to the government for a consent to have a child. I kind of agree with this.edwinissweet wrote:its scary how close minded some of you are.
