Perhaps protectorate would be the realistic way to go.

A protectorate, in international law, is an autonomous territory that is protected diplomatically or militarily against third parties by a stronger state or entity. In exchange for this, the protectorate usually accepts specified obligations, which may vary greatly, depending on the real nature of their relationship. However, it retains sufficient measure of sovereignty and remains a state under international law.

OH, I almost forgot..

In the state I live in, Sinaloa, the campaigns for new governor started. On one side, the horse of the actual governor, PRI party Jesus Vizcarra, a guy that's linked to the drug trafficking since a boy, there are pictures of him with capos like Ismael "Mayo" Zambada, and everyone in Culiacan, capital of the state of which he is municipal president with license, knows he made his fortune exporting drugs inside cows, just like the governor of Sonora Bours.

On the other side is Mario Lopez Valdes "Malova" a senator for Sinaloa with License who decided not to participate in the election of the candidate for his party, PRI, since the dice were loaded towards Jesus Vizcarra.

He then joined the PAN party to form a coalition.

Well, yesterday his 16-year old son was beat by 3 "ecapuchados" (gunmen with the face covered) , one of them with a high caliber rifle. All this in a centric street of Los Mochis, Sinaloa where he resides.

Is worth mentioning that Mario Lopez Valdez "Malova" made his money in a clean manner, as nobody has ever linked him to anything illegal, not even in rumors.

And yet, Vizcarra will win.

So, drugs get legalized. A guy starts a Drugs R Us in his hometown. He needs to find a supplier. Who is his supplier going to be? Well, the supplier will be someone overseas (i.e. where the drugs come from). So he'll sign a contract with some dude in Colombia who is probably a member or leader of a drug cartel. What if the rival drug cartel wants to be the supplier? Are they going to negotiate fairly with the Drugs R Us guy? Or are they going to try to steal the drugs or kill the other supplier? We're not talking about weed here; we're talking about heroin, cocaine...

My point is, the drug cartels aren't going to say "oh, drugs are legal now so we need to go do something else." I mean, how naive are you people?

The only thing that could possibly undermine drug cartels is the US military. I suspect if a big enough company became involved in the drug trade, and wanted it bad enough, they would have the US military step in to protect its industry.
If the US legalized all drugs, then cocaine could be produced in other places. Does the needed plant grow in Florida? Hawaii? I could easily see a country legalizing drugs just so they could be the sole supplier to the US.

Not to mention, if drug production in the US is legal, you can bet lots of producers would pop up to produce all the synthetics and grow all the natural ones that would grow for sure in the US (think mary jane, mushrooms, peyote, etc).
Okay, and again, let's say stuff gets produced in the US. What makes you think the drug cartels won't try to run those people out of business?

Expense.

They will try, but when drugs are legalized, the profit margin drops significantly.

I understand what you are saying and how it could happen. I just don't think it would happen.

Let's say you have a company that makes a brand new product. Now let's say a competitor comes up with a similar product. That's great. But let's say the first company starts killing off people at the second company. What's to stop cartels from doing this? And then raising prices? The federal government of course... how are they doing stopping cartels right now?

Exactly..

The inflated prices on street drugs are artificial. Drug trade and violence are largely caused by government prohibition.

They may try in the beginning, but I don't think using violence is a sustainable free market strategy..

I could be wrong.

There's been a lot of news pushed by the agencies about legalizing or decriminalizing drugs. At least in Mexico. This will be of great help, but with the lack of education from parents this might be a disaster, as drugs will go down in price and "ni-nis" as they were coined by the UNAM director would end up their lives in disaster.

Ni-Ni -> youngster that don't go to school neither work.

But how can stop abductions? Extortions?

The zeitgeist is Greed, and that's the problem. Capitalism as we know it as failed. We need the addition of another values from the parents and the government policies.

Well I lived in Los Angeles, Mexico for 3 years. All I hear about the motherland is drug wars and other types of gang violence. The perception of Mexico in Cali is a government on the verge of collapsing. Chaos!
All the Mexican women here are perpetually pregnant. Is it the same down there?

I'm gonna venture a guess that the main reason they are always pregnant is to have American-born children who are guaranteed citizenship, making it less likely that we deport them for being here illegally. That, and the fact that they probably get access to entitlements when they have children.

I think Kid_A is half joking with his commentary on Mexican procreation. Although he has manifested that you should apply to the government for a consent to have a child. I kind of agree with this.

As for the comment on having a bunch of children so that they don't get deported, well, you only need 1 child, and when he becomes 18, he can legalize his parents.

Still tho, I believe illegal immigrants should be treated whit more respect, yes they have entered the country illegally but don't we all have a little mercy on our.. well, mind?

Clinton comited perjury, which is I believe worse in the US, and he is still a respected figure.

And, the problem whit those illegal immigrants collecting unemployment checks, well, shouldn't be a rule against it? After all they don't pay all the taxes and are not citizens, in this I do agree with those who pay their taxes.

What I'm amazed tho, is that if Bill Gates gives away most of his money to charity, why don't give it to illegal immigrants who need a lot of charity? For sure most Mexicans (in Mexico) would buy his products, which we don't, we buy 5 USD discs with MS Office.

mexicans in mexico need not worry about the mexicans in the states. you have your own immigration issues to worry about. mexicans treat central americans way worse than america treats its immigrants. But this thread isnt about immigration.
