Iceland [Abandoned]

Postby Jafnhár on Mon Apr 02, 2007 6:09 pm

April 21st update:

Draft:

My idea is to have four main "continent" (for a lack of a better term) bonuses (yellow, blue, green and red) since Iceland is usually divided into four parts (norðurland, vesturland/vestfirðir, suðurland og austurland). It is yet to draw the "countries" to it, but the lines I have already drawn could be "subcontinents" or something in that direction. The brown zone in the middle is the interior and I expect it not to be passable.

What thoughts do you have? Is this some good?

it is to small. I only see 16-20 'countries'...I think you would need to break it down into smaller 'countries'.

it could be good though...if you added some central impassible features/glaciers etc...

Yeah, dividing it into more "countries" is exactly what I was talking about. But do you then think I could use these countries I have for sub-bonuses or should I just have four ones?

All feedback is appreciated.

Just have four. It's not big enough for sub bonuses

I don't see much appeal in a map of Iceland personally. With some hard work and a little imagination you might be able to convince me otherwise.

The first two things you need to do however are:
1. Get yourself a decent graphics application such as Photoshop or Fireworks.
2. Add more territories. Perhaps consider using the glaciers as territories, even if they're just neutral.

Well, Iceland is my country. Can you explain why you don't have much appeal of it as a map?

I'd like to use good graphics application - like these - to add some landmarks in the background like on the Australia map. However, programs like that are expensive and I'm sure some nice guy here or outside this game could do the above for me.

Being very experienced with the old graphics program in my computer, is there anything special that stands in the way of continuing using it? I'd rather waste few extra hours with my cheap program than using the better ones, if possible, because with hard work it is not that easy to see the difference.

The territories are yet to add, only few lines are drawn to question if I could use it for sub-bonuses (according to Spockers I should not). Your idea of using the glaciers for territories is interesting, however I think it is a bit unrealistic. Making 32 territories should not be a problem.

I like the idea of an Iceland map...but without a proper program I doubt you will be able to pull it off.

Maybe someone on this site can help you get Photoshop?

Could you add some islands to "spice" things up? Like Grimsey in the north or Vestmannaeyjar in the south? Or are they too small?

Or stick the Faroes in the South East?

The GIMP is free, it can do anything you need it to.

Adding Grímsey and Vestmannaeyjar is an excellent idea, bigbullyweedave. They are small, yes, but I think it should still be possible.

About GIMP, is it hard to learn how use it?

If you haven't used photoshop or the like, it will be hard to get used to, with all the layers and such.

But have a play around and you should get the hang of it.

All right, I'll download either of these and see what I can do. As a matter of fact, I worked one summer adjusting pictures with some lighter version of Adobe Photoshop, but I doubt that will help me drawing them.

This is going fine, I'm adding pictures of Geysir and such in the background and making countries. I'll show an update soon.

Thank you.

I found a good picture of Geysir (http://people.debian.org/~tille/package ... 1600x1200/) under the GNU Free Documentation License Version 1.1. I decided to use it as a background, here are two versions:

Which one is better? Personally, I feel that one is too dark and the other too light, I might have to change it again.

Both are too dark. Make it a lighter blue.

It's good you think so, if there are no more opinions I'll continue using the third map. Now, the next thing to do is to add territories, update will be shown when that is over.

Here's an update:

Doesn't look that fancy but I won't start making smooth lines and colours (and names) on it until I'll be sure where and how the territories shall be.

With Grímsey and Vestmannaeyjar there are 28 territories. Should I add 4 extra (for 32) or are 28 ones OK?

people usually aim for multiples of 6...id add 2 and go for 30 territories...

id also outline the territories in another neutral color...white/gray/black to give the borders more definition...

All right. I didn't want to do it right away if I had to split the territories or change them somehow. I might add Papey in the north or Viðey in the west (islands) for 30, or create extra territories somewhere, do you have a suggestion?

About "Ísland" at the top, it is the Icelandic word for "Iceland". Since the rest of the names are in Icelandic, I decided that I'd need to have that one in Icelandic too. The English one is shown below.
