Original

Husband & wife... Kansas Joe McCoy and lyrics by Memphis Minnie (1929)
in response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

This song has been recorded and performed by a boatload of musicians

A few recent ones... Bob Dylan & Robert Plant & Alison Krause & Jeff Buckley's Zep cover

Quite possibly the best intro to any song, ever.

Here's one of my favorite performers from when I was a kid, Linda Ronstadt. Her cover of "When Will I Be Loved?" Is infinitely better than the Everly Brothers' original. She brings a lot more energy, and of course her phenomenal voice.

The same goes for her cover of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day"

Cheers- hope you post a few more classical covers too.

Glenn Gould- Goldberg Variations

First time I listened to him playing I found him speaking/singing kind of weird. Now it's just like he's in his own amazing world when he plays, and listening to it almost feels like intruding,

This live performance of Blinded me with Science is about the saddest thing I've ever seen.

Well, here's one. One of the most beautiful and beloved pieces ever composed, Pachelbel's Canon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvNQLJ1_HQ0

And George Winston's piano version. Now it starts out sounding like it's going to be another sleepy elevator-music version, but stick with it to hear some of the wonderful things Winston does with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kllZlF6mB2s

In the classical directions...
W.Carlos got a lot of attention with "Switched on Bach" and his synthesizer renditions of Ludwig Van Beethoven used in the soundtrack for the Kubrik film "A Clockwork Orange."

I saw Virgil Fox when he toured with his Heavy Organ tour playing all kinds of Bach, Beethoven, Wagner etc. and he was nothing short of brilliant.

Keith Emerson incorporated a variety composers and styles with piano improvisations in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's music. The studio version of "Take a Pebble" from their debut album is a beautiful song... this live version get's a bit loose.

In my opinion a good cover changes the song and gives it a different spin.

The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
and then a cover by metalcore band Confide who drummer is now in Avenged Sevenfold.

One cover that really annoys me is this:
a cover of Saosin's Seven Years, a song that is regarded as one of the best from one of the best post-hardcore releases ever, featuring Anthony Green, an outstanding vocalist, possibly the best in rock, who sounds the same live
The cover is by Never Shout Never, an acoustic artist im actually fond of.

Tom Waits' classic Step Right Up attempted by Patrick Stump.
Tom Waits cover of the Daniel Johnson song, KING KONG.

Tom Waits songs:
St.Vincent covers Big Black Mariah
Claudia Bettinaglio covers Clap Hands

Queens of the Stone Age covers Goin' Out West and Kaisers Orchestra doing the same song
Tom did it in Tulsa back in 2008... I was there and absolutely fucking loved this show!
this song was playing as they walked through the bar in the movie Fight Club

Neko Case sings Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis
Someone doing Invitation to the Blues and someone doing Blue Valentine
Dave Mullen sings On the Nickel
Red Hot & Blue... Jockey Full of Bourbon

Here's a classic song covered by about a million people. I had to be real selective to narrow it down to a few significant re-do's. They are roughly in chronological order.

Ghost riders In The Sky
Burl Ives (the first to record it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s7jJd8E ... re=related

Marty Robbins, classic C&W style
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1xSYyMDaq4

The Ramrods -- an instrumental version w/ sound effects
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWTjjm-G ... re=related

Johnny Cash. Couldn't pass this one up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mynzbmrtp9I

The Outlaws, Probably my favorite, but I like electric Guitar, also the dramatic acoustic intro.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhqD-ejBMyk

Spiderbait- part of the soundtrack to Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage. A little too punky for me but the scene with Cage and Sam Elliot riding to the final conflict through the dark with flames flying from wheels and hoofs with this in the background, was great cinema.

The Kinks' You Really Got Me is classic, as is Van Halen's famous cover, but here's an interesting take by Robert Palmer, best known for songs such as Addicted to Love.
