"SAXI, I'm no economist it seems to me a tax on Christmas trees will depress tree sales. But using the tax money to buy TV ads to promote Christmas trees may offset the negative impact of the tax. My farmer put a Christmas tree in my barn last year. I liked it a lot!"

I don't get the trap thing.

This seems kind of close to another bail out. If the industry needs advertising, then they should pay for it on their own without the government stepping in ( i.e. Let them add 12 cents to every tree). Also, if these companies don't have enough money for advertising, then it is probably a failing business. People buy fake trees because the cost of live trees keeps going up and gets ridiculous.

So why does this happen? What motivates the Agriculture Department and the legislators to implement this tax?

Because they know that once they start taxing something for "good" reasons, they can later expand those taxes for whatever reason they want.

I'm not sure. Even the fact that this tax is talked about is free advertising. No publicity is bad publicity?

It just seems like the tax may hold them afloat this season, but in a future season this tax will be supporting and subsidizing. So, they may see that they wont last long enough without the taxes starting now. ( This is just speculation, because I really don't know.)

This is a tradition that goes back a long time here in The Club. Basically, you start a thread to see if you can get a specific person to post in it. Then, when they do, you have them trapped! However, the rules of Trap Threads say you have to post a dialog of animals speaking to give a fair warning to the poster you're trying to trap. However, some people violate that rule and trap posters without the animal dialog warning. And recently, some people have become concerned there are too many traps being set and the forums are becoming too dangerous and feel we need regulation over traps.

I do not support killing a tree so that you can hang pieces of cheap plastic in your living room.
