17 Films to Look Forward to in 2012

Postby pimpdave on Wed Dec 21, 2011 3:57 pm

New article in the Atlantic: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainmen ... 63/#slide1

I had to drop two to make the poll fit, so I dropped The Woman in Black and The Five Year Engagement.

I voted for all but looper and les mis. I think all the premises are interesting, but like they said in the article, looper could be as bad as paycheck (and I'll add Wanted), I'd like to hear more. I never read Les Mis, never seen the play, dunno what it's about, but I'm just typically not into that whole french era shit.

Prometheus could be bad (dunno how much Scott still has left in him) but the upside is way too high.

I'm interested now in reading the hunger games, always heard the hype but never really looked into it.

I think Avengers, Dark Knight, Hobbit, Brave and Lincoln are obvious must see's. Maybe also Django Unchained. For the first 3, they're based on series that most people love, especially 80s-90s ppl. And the last 3 are must see's based on studio (Pixar on Brave) or director. Essentially fanboy type movies.

For me, Ted, Skyfall, and Great Gatsby are also must see, but I don't think they'll be as widely anticipated as some of the heavy hitters on this list. Personally, I'm sold on Walberg's comedic ability, Craig's Bond, and DiCaprio doing anything these days, plus I loved the original Gatsby movie (Redford, Waterson, etc) although the book was eh.

Gangster Squad, 5 year engagement, and The Woman in Black are all movies I'll watch, mainly because I enjoy the leads in them, but for now I'm not seeing anything particularly awesome about them.

Lastly, there's Cloud Atlas. Solid leads and director, very loose premise, seems like oscar baiting for sure, and could go either way.

Overall though, 2012 definitely looks solid. While I enjoyed many of the sequels this year (HP, Transformers), I was really not overwhelmed by anything in the cinema (aside from Gosling and Gordon-Levitt's rise to stardom).

Django Unchained (Tarantino is mah favski), Great Gatsby (one of my favorite books...I'll be cringing every time diCrappio talks though) and Dark Knight (obvs) are really the only ones I WANT to see.

Otherwise...meh.

Yeah, some of these are definitely rentals, like Ted.

I'll wait to see if Skyfall is well received, because Sam Mendes royally fucked up the action in Road to Perdition. I saw that one in the theater in Manhattan (which meant ridiculously high ticket prices) and was so let down, felt so ripped off, that guy has a lot to make up for. And when I say well received, I mean by fans of the gritty Bond, the one from the first couple novels. That's why I loved Casino Royale. If they brought back Martin Campbell to direct, I'd automatically want to see it in the theater. Remember, Campbell made the two best Bond films of the last 20 years. Goldeneye and CR.

Brave will be good as a date movie, otherwise a rental. Pixar can always be counted on for that (except this year...).

I have faith in Looper, actually. The director is a talented storyteller and I think this could be another surprise, like Source Code was earlier this year.

Gangster Squad is directed by the same guy who did Zombieland. Sounds like it could be theater worthy to me.

Cloud Atlas is a rental. One of the three directors is the guy who did Run Lola Run, so it could be good, but I don't have high hopes.

The Great Gatsby is directed by the same guy who did Romeo + Juliet (the one with Clare Danes). Could be some theater worthy spectacle, but I won't be rushing out opening weekend.

When has a Tarantino movie not been worth a trip to the theater? Django Unchained is an opening night kind of thing (or Christmas afternoon, rather) Same with The Dark Knight Rises. I saw The Dark Knight five times in the theater, twice in Imax (a legit one with a dome). It'll probably be the same with the new one. I get more excited for these Batman movies than anything else, which although I often try to deny it to myself, proves Batman is my favorite comic book character ever (even though you don't want to say that, cause it's so common, you want to pick something else to seem unique).

Prometheus is a must see in the theater for me. Even though I don't always like Ridley Scott's movies, I was too young to see any of his sci-fi stuff in the theater, and those are my favorites of his. I expect a great story, amazing effects, and action so poorly directed you'll think someone smashed you in the back of the head with a canoe paddle, then spun you around for five minutes straight before demanding you run in a straight line for 20 feet.

The Hobbit, Lincoln and The Avengers are all things I'll see in the theater, no doubt, just maybe not opening weekend, and not something I'll go out of my way for, like seeing The Dark Knight Rises in Imax at least twice.

Tarantino and Batman go without saying for me.

I want to see Lincoln just because Day-Lewis is just such a damn good actor.

The Five Times:

1. Alone at midnight day it was released.
2. After work that same day with some co workers.
3. In Imax with old friend who had also already seen it but wanted to see it in Imax.
4. Went with some family members who had not seen it.
5. Imax again with girlfriend.

What's the point in watching The Dark Knight Rises if the Joker is dead.

I think The Dark Knight is the only movie I regret I didn't see first at the theater.

AoG's last time at the movies, Inception LMAO. What a uber overrated movie. They tried so hard that it went from a good movie to a lame one.

It caught my eye that the director of The Great Gatsby is the same guy that did this song.

I will likely see all of these movies at some point (although I only voted for the comic book movies).

Avengers - Fills me with trepidation because super hero movies with shittons of characters, generally don't work (e.g. Spiderman 3 or any of the X-Men movies). Related aside - I liked the first and second X-Men movies and I liked First Class, but if I didn't already know the characters and their relevant personalities, I would have hated it (e.g. Angel in the First Class movie was very different than her comic book counterpart, and that annoyed me).

Batman - Also fills me with trepidation. The Knightfall storyline was one of the best comic storylines I've ever read. And this film needs to do that justice (assuming that's what the film is about).

The one I'm most excited for? Lincoln. I think it could be awesome.

Really? The Dark Knight didn't convince you Jonathon and Christopher Nolan can tell an awesome Batman story?

And the biggest mistake they could have made was to adapt an existing Batman comic book. Far better to fully understand the characters and craft a story of their own around them, even if it borrows from other storylines.

Also, apparently this is Christopher Nolan's favorite Batman story (I haven't read it, use spoiler tags if you discuss, it's in the mail coming to me): http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Long-Hallo ... 886&sr=1-1

Long Halloween is excellent (also the Hush books, if you haven't read them).

As a comic book (and book) fan, I'm always afraid of movies ruining the comics or books (whether or not there are good movies before the next movie). I was nervous for The Dark Knight, I was nervous for Spiderman, I was nervous for LOTR (even after the first movie and the second movie).

Also, Knightfall, I believe, happened in the 90s. It's not really a current storyline. And I'm not saying it should be adapted for the movie necessarily; instead, I don't want them to f*ck up what was a good story.

I really liked the No Man's Land arc. I remember rereading that a bunch of times when I was a kid. Someone should really consider doing that plotline in a movie or three.
