Dear Pancakes (an open letter)

Postby natty dread on Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:52 am

Dear Pancakes,

WTF? You used to be cool.

I mean, you taste good and all, but why are you so inconvenient? Why must you be so difficult? It takes almost an hour to make a batch of you that only takes 15 minutes to eat. How is that fair? How is that reasonable?

I mean, look at your cousin French Toast. He tastes almost the same and all I need to make him is bread and milk. Whereas you require all kinds of ingredients - eggs, milk, flour, sugar... and don't start about those ready-made pancake mixes, because we both know those suck ass.

So, Pancakes, if you want to stay as my favorite dessert/breakfast, you got to step up your game. Just saying....

I'm also confused about the 1-hour prep/cook time. Mine combined is 20 minutes :-s

Apparently, you guys don't quite understand something:

Over here, in these parts of the world, when you make pancakes... YOU MAKE A WHOLE FUCKING LOT OF PANCAKES.

Not just one or two pancakes, like some kind of pancake-fearing sissyboy. No, we take pancakes seriously around here.

Those are american pancakes. Finnish pancakes are much thinner, which is probably why it takes so much longer to make them...

My dad made very thin pancakes and they were delicious. I'm supportive of thin pancakes.

Hey, that's how we make Romanian ones as well.

You can then put jam, or sometimes other stuff(they work as appetizers sometimes), and roll them up.

These are proper fuckin' pancakes:

Pretty sure you need egg to make French Toast too.

Also, relevant: http://www.weebls-stuff.com/songs/Strawberry+Pancakes/

In these parts a crepe is closer to a tortilla --rolled up with good stuff in it-- and nothing like a pancake which is never rolled and always stacked. What about waffles?

f*ck crepes, who do they think they are?

They're just the snobby uncle of pancakes.

I don't know what you call french toast over there, but unless it's somehow an omelette I'm pretty sure it's not going to need any eggs.

The only french toast I know requires eggs as it's a custard base.

yeah you need some eggs so that when you put them on the skillet you get a nice crust for the sugar etc. otherwise you just have milk and bread in a pan. equally delicious, but not french toast.

Soggy. :D

Seriously, what we call french toast is milk with an egg or two, dipped and cooked.

BUT.. "institutions" (summer camps, schools, etc.) sometimes make it by dipping bread in pancake batter. They call it French Toast, but its not the same.
