AK_iceman wrote:i think its mardi gras

this is, as High said, correct...

Mardi is the french word for Tuesday...and gras means fat...therefore...

Fat Tuesday!

they call it Fat Tuesday because it is the day before Ash Wednesday...Ash Wednesday is the day that starts Lent...Catholics give up one sin... (i.e. alcohol, candy, soda, meat, etc....) Fat Tuesday is just a big party because people are trying to get every last bit of whatever they are giving up for Lent...

any more random New Orleans/Louisiana/french/cajun knowledge y'all are interested in?? just let me know...

That's the problem with everything. In the US it seems to me you are either a republican or a democrat, a conservative or a liberal. Everything is polarised. What about the middle ground? What happened to that? How can 'liberalism' be any more of a mental disease than its nemesis? That comment showed a huge lack of imagination, but i believe that has been fostered by the politicians for their own ends. For example:

George Bush: 'You are either with us or against us.' Very clever. There is only room for two opinions and that's all you are allowed.

It's not quite as pronounced in the UK, but it's not far off.

I think that the middle ground is still there but the politicians themselves must come off as having a very strong postion because if they seem wishy-washy then less people will vote for them.

-waffles, not a clue. does it have to do with when you say "Anyways, they both blow but I just chill, man" it may have something to do with i cannot pronounce ceased in my head.

#76 A man is selling flowers on the corner, and you walk up to him and say "How many roses do you have?"
"All of my flowers except for 2 are roses." he replies.
"How many Tulips?" You ask.
"All of my flowers except for 2 are tulips." he replies.
"And daisies?" You ask.
"All of my flowers except for 2 are daisies." he replies.

What is the largest number of flowers that he can have?
What are they?
What is the smallest number of flowers that he can have?
What are they?(6)

#77 I have 2 books on the bookshelf, standing side by side, just like the books in a bookstore. The book on the right would have had twice as many pages as the book on the left, if only the book on the left had 5 more pages than it does now. The number of pages in the book on the right is not only a perfect square, but a perfect cube as well, and is less than 500.

A bookworm starts eating at the front cover of the book on the left (Eating it), and eats all the way through the last page of the book on the right (Eating it as well). How many pages did the bookworm eat?

#78 You have committed some terrible crime, and the US government has imprisoned you in a very odd type of prison. There are 61 cells, numbered -30 to 30, all in a line, with doors in between them and exit doors on the outsides of cell -30 and 30. You are placed in cell #0, and every day they flip a (fair) coin and, based on the flip, open one door or another, and you must walk through it. Therefore, on day 1, you will either move to cell -1 or 1. Eventually, as days, weeks, and months go by, you will be in either cell -30 or 30, and if the coin flip ends up that you must move to cell -31, or cell 31, you are set free. You have no choice, you walk randomly back and forth based on the coin flip.

Visually, the cells look something like:
Freedom<-- [-30][-29][-28]...[-2][-1][0][1][2]...[28][29][30] -->Freedom

Now, for the question... What is more likely:
a) You get out on day 31
b) You get out on day 310
c) You get out on day 3100

#79 What occurs twice in a lifetime, but only once a year, twice in a week but never in a day?
(3)

#80 Fill in the x's with the correct numbers, and explain why:

1 1 2 x 2 3
5 6 1 2 x 1
4 x 5 6 4 2
3 3 8 7 5 3
2 x 1 7 6 4
1 5 4 3 2 1

#70 What comes next in the series, and why?
Triangle, Dot, Circle, Square, Circle, Pentagon, _______(4) Nonagon - johnny

#72 A girl was walking through the forest to her granny to give her some eggs that she was carrying in her basket.
She came accross a bridge with an angry troll guarding it "give me half your eggs and half an egg and I will let you pass" said the troll. She did this, without cutting any of her eggs in half.
Before she reached her granny's cottage she had to pass four bridges in all, each guarded by a troll and each making the same demand. Each time, she was able to give a whole number of eggs to the troll (She never had to cut an egg in half)
When she got to her granny's cottage, she found that she had no more eggs left.
How many eggs did she start off with? (5) 15 - resitnecdan

#73 You have two ropes of unequal lengths each of which when lighted on one end burns up in exactly in one hour. However the rate of burning in any given length on any rope is not known. That is, the burning of the rope is non-uniform along the length. Also the direction of burning is immaterial. That is, any point on any of the ropes burns equally in the forward as well as backward direction.
The question is, how will you measure exactly 45 minutes with these two ropes, a matchbox and nothing else? You are not allowed to cut the ropes or twist them etc.(4) Light both ends of one rope. Light one end of second rope.
When first rope stops burning half an hour has passed. At this point light the other end of the second rope. This will now finish burning in 15 minutes. - Mr dexter

#74 Alfred, Betty, Charlie, and Diane go to their local bar for drinks.
Betty turns to Alfred and says "Alfred, You owe me a drink."
This reminds Charlie, and he turns to Betty and says "Hey, Betty, you owe me TWO drinks."
Diane, remembering their last night out, turns to Charlie and says "Wait a minute, Charlie, you owe me THREE drinks."
Alfred, not to be outdone, turns to Diane and says "Yeah, but Diane, you owe me FOUR drinks."
"Oh no," groans Charlie. "We're going to be drinking all night!"
Assuming everybody is telling the truth, and all drinks cost the same amount, how can you keep these poor drunks from being stuck in the bar all night? What is the smallest number of drinks they have to buy to settle all debts?(5) 3 drinks - mr dex

#75 One of your 4 children has gotten into the chocolate chip cookies. You want to find and punish the bad child. Whenever you ask them all a question, as a group, 3 of them always lie and 1 of them always tells the truth, but on any one occassion you have no idea who, in fact, is the truth teller. You ask them, then, who ate the cookies, and here are their replies:

Anne - Bertie ate the cookies.
Bertie - Dennis ate the cookies.
Clara - I did not eat the cookies.
Dennis - Bertie is lying when she says I ate the cookies.

Who ate the cookies, and how did you figure it out?(4) clara - bridzs_lover

The book on the right has 64 pages and the one on the left has 27.
So 27+64+3(covers)=94

78 none are more likely, all coins have an equal chance of being head or tail, therefore you always have an equal chance or flipping the same 31 times in a row.
