It's just human nature to fear others and to feel insecure among people different from you. Imagine what goes in the back of the mind of people who find all those daily provocations to their fears and have to hide them because they repeat to them 123213 times a day what racism is and that is wrong. But there's also some old timers in their family that tell them racism is right.

Some just gotta snap. There's too much tension, but it isn't anybodies fault, it's fault of the situation. It's like sex in the catholic countries.

If you repress something that's natural to your nature it will have to come to the surface like a volcano every once in a while.

No, that's not all it takes.. nor is it what your descriptions showed. To be a hate crime, someone has to be attacked BECAUSE they were of another race, etc and because the person feels that is essentially reason enough for the criminal act. But perpetuating the belief that this is about any attack between races or people of differing ethnic identities, religions, etc, will lead to a lot more devision and hatred, so congratulate yourself for that.

But there's also some old timers in their family that tell them racism is right. .

There will always be people wanting to find things wrong in other people things that make them superior to those "others". It is why we have sexism, racism, etc, etc. and you certainly see it here in religious debates.

However, the difference between civilization and anarchy is that in civilization acting upon those feeling is severely limited and most people at least try to keep the feelings to a minimum. But, the hard part is the target always changes. A standard is that whoever is less fortunate, poorer, at the bottom of society is always somehow "guilty" of doing something "bad" -- be it true evil or just distasteful/laziness, etc.

And that is why today's rhetoric is getting more and more frightening. Becuase the belief, again, that it is OK to blame the lower classes for their misfortune, that those who don't have decent jobs just are not working hard enough and are "lazY' (though not all of those you know personally, of course) is becoming mainstream. Even suggesting something different gets one labeled an "arrogant liberal".

It is one thing to disagreem and debate someone fiercely, but to disdain anyone who disagrees, as we see so prominent in today's poiltics and rhetoric, ... is a fearsome and extraordinarily worrisome development.
