A year ago I was going to buy 6 full systems and did a little research and found the same thing: it's hard to match the price they offer you in a full setup. But I guess you can still look around for a month and find a way to save 100 dls. I bet that if you used your time more wisely you would've made 200 instead.

I find that you can if you buy super cheap crap....like Fry's specials, ECS motherboards etc. But if you are the kind of person that builds your own computers, you probably use nice Asus motherboards with Intel NIC's etc. You use higher-performance hardware. I stopped building POS computers because it was a waste of time, just go buy a cheap one from a manufacturer. But if you want a nice system, building your own will definitely save money.

Business computers usually have less bloatware installed on them. I have always blown away the OS and re-installed from scratch. I enjoy the systems much better when their software is designed around me and not designed for the manufacturer and their wallet. I've heard some arguments that on laptops this is a bad idea and the manufacturers include special drivers. I call BS on it though. I won't ever stop re-loading my computers OS's.

To continue on this:

I always first play with the computer and all the features, to make sure I'm not missing something later when I install a clean version of Windows.

If you are one of those who like to borrow windows from torrents, make sure you get one that's unmodified AND do a md5 sum check.

Also, I shut down any unnecesary services with the .regs of blackviper. I turn off system restore, paging..

And finally, I've changed from my youngster days of getting ton of cracks and now I only install gnu free software, these hippies have really impressed me with their software, it's all you need and more, and open source.

With the systems of taday an antivirus is no bother at all, avast for instance is free and light.

All this because I log in to 4 banks and pay with credit cards all the time. Better to be safe than sorry.

I find myself using ubuntu more and more these days. I'm starting to struggle to find reasons to boot to windows, or to keep using it - any software that i need is available on linux and it runs like 10 times faster...

hey, maybe it's because i don't have to dedicate 50% of system resources to bloated antivirus softwares that at this point do pretty much as much harm as they do good...

I notice XP makes my netbook battery last a while longer than Ubuntu does, but yeah, that's about it.
