Need a free workout routine

Anyone know any good ones? Would be even better if they have exercises tailored for rugby players.

I know a few, but it depends on what position you play,

Inside/outside center.

Over this summer I have to build my upper body and get in shape...I realized this spring that I'm so poorly fit.

That's not a position I play, I'm afraid. So I don't have a regime for that, For what it's worth, the centres I know work the rowing machines and do standard treadmill work that any back player does. Rowing machine work will help you for upper body stuff while getting endurance.

The other bit of advice I can recommend- take up a lesson or two in judo if you have the chance.

Eat sandwiches. A lot of 'em.

Hope that helps!

No. Sandwiches killed my father and raped my mother.

Don't dismiss me off hand. Judo lessons are great for centres. Backs are crap at doing the basic of tackling. And centres have to put in tackles. Judo is a quick way to learn how to tackle and how to avoid injuries when tackled. Two lessons of judo will teach you skills you never thought about.

You'll be better at tackling and better at taking a tackle. Fun thing is, you can probably get those lessons free if there's a dojo nearby. A lot of them offer a free lesson.

Rowing machines (ergs) aren't designed so much for upper body strength as they are designed for explosive leg drive. However, they do offer a very broad range of muscle workouts, so if you don't want to get so much into weights and whatnot, I can PM you some exercises you can do on an erg. Your school gym probably has one and all regular gyms have them.

I wasn't dismissing the judo lessons. I don't think I'd be able to take lessons over the summer...

The position he's playing doesn't really need to emphasise upper body strength. Cardio is the main focus, legs next, and upper body tertiary. If the team is playing right, upper body strength in a centre is only necessary for injury prevemtion.

Oh, I thought I read something in the thread about upper body strength.

But yeah, I'm part of our rowing team, so I'd be happy to pass along some good workouts that will help build good cardio-vascular tissue, and give you good endurance. There are a whole lot of machines that you can use to work whatever muscle group you want, but ergs are the most inclusive machines there are, since the rowing stroke uses almost every muscle you have.

No, you were correct, he wants upper body strength. I was wrong, not you. For what it's worth, the bit that I was right on was that working the upper body won't help his position.

You should build a fence. Get some posts and a post-slammer and start pounding away. That'll make a man of you.

We realized it far before this spring.

You need to load a backpack with 70 lbs and run flat out for 1 mile. That'll fix you up. If you have access to a canvas sack or a punching bag, rig it up to a frame and practice tackling it... Better if somebody is able to push it around so that you miss, sometimes, and land on your face. Teach you not to miss your tackles, and it'll make good Youtube footage. When you're doing it, have your mother throw a bucket of water at you every couple of minutes. Makes you miserable and soggy, just like you should be when you're training.

Then, we get even better. We want to simulate 300 pounds hitting you, so have the fattest kid you know suddenly appear from the side as you're doing pushups and flatten you. It'll be fun for the both of you. :P

As for chin-ups and push-ups. Ideally, you should be doing three reps of 20... But just do as many as you're able and anticipate the fat kid hitting you at some point. 8-)

Ever watched Karate kid? Wax on and Wax off. You can make some money by offering to wax people's cars and get some muscle building, too. :P

If you don't do this on sand (or maybe thick grass) your joints may get fucked.

I dunno about rugby, but for basic weightlifting I've heard good things about Starting Strength

you can find most of the stuff in it online for free.

I hate jogging.

over the summer I'll be playing basketball every MWF, Soccer on tuesdays and Softball (lol, softball) on sundays. Really the only way I'll run is if I'm playing a sport with it...I can't run for the sake of running, I get so bored (short attention span).
