It's disingenuous at best, and false advertising at worst. To call an alternative universe character "one of our major characters" is just lame.

Though comics do this all the time when it comes to killing people. Marvel advertised for six months home one of the FF was going to die... and Johnny Storm "died" and was gone for about six months, only to come back in the nick of time to save the day. That's only the most recent "fake death". So this "fake gay" stuff is no worse than that.

Anyone remember the "Death of Superman"? I think I still have a sealed copy of that somewhere.

Oh, they all died a couple of years ago.Blue Beetle, Aquaman, Flash (again), Batman, Green Lantern, pretty much everyone.
But the whole DC universe has been rebooted -(again) - so I guess Earth 2 doesn't count as an "Elseworld" - it'll be part of the new ongoing continuity.

... but this new "Earth 2" is not the same old "Earth 2" that they had pre-Crisis.

THAT is the original GL.

Calling this new guy the "original" because he has the same name is bogus.

They aren't getting rid of the original GL are they?

The DC Universe has been f'd up since the 1980's. I can't keep track of what they do there. This whole new "52" thing they started last year confuses me. Did they do away with all previous continuity???

Even when they tried to consolidate the multi-verse... back during the original Crisis... they didn't have the balls to go all the way with it. They kept Powergirl... but were vague about here origin, because she couldn't be a Kryptonian in the new world order. Her existence was proof of a multiverse that no longer existed. It makes no sense!

Now they do this latest cop-out. If they still have the real GL... this guy is a sham, and the whole thing is marketing BS.

Oh wait... I already knew that. :)

It's okay, natty. You can go back to your world where the homogenous concept of culture does X, Y, and Z because somebody sneezed. It's probably why you see misogyny and bigotry so often.

I don't think your observations fit that conclusion.

You need to observe harder!

Sweving ot a little, I got "Rocketeer Adventures" from my book club. It's a bunch of comic book Names who love the classic Rocketeer comics and have done some new stories in the same setting.
It's absolutely delightful, and also has one of the sexiest women in comics too.

I wasn't aware DC Comics had some other minor 'gay characters':

Boston Globe wrote:...DC comics has other gay characters, too, including Kate Kane, the current Batwoman, The Question, and married characters Apollo and the Midnighter.
