So are we throwing a particle physics themed party or what?

Here's one take on it: http://bigthink.com/ideas/42114

I can't say I really buy string theory as long as it can't make any testable predictions. Seems more like philosophy till then.

This just makes people feel better. I bet ya in the next few weeks they will find another planet that might be just like earth and we all get to fantasize about aliens, and then the week after that Paul Krugmann will call for a fake alien invasion to stimulate the economy for the 3rd time....

I don't know if it was your intention, Scott, but you just called bleeding edge science, "escapism".

Be real for a second...isn't this like the 15th time the Boson has been discovered? ;)

Keep your pity, and your faith in round 15 of "WE really REALLY found the Higgs this time!"

If you paid a little more attention to the wording of the announcement, you might understand why you are wrong here.

It amazes me how good some people are able to not understanding their own native tongue.

Indeed, those silly scientists proving that the Higgs boson exists to a certainty of 1 in 2-3 million and thus validating a 50 year old prediction and the Standard model of particle physiscs itself.

IRRELEVANT!

Now, let's talk about what nonsense politician X said today, that's what's REALLY important.
That's what will be remembered 100 years from now.

Certainly being implied.

And I did pay attention to the "announcement".
Anticipation is rising over the expected announcement soon of more evidence for the existence of the long-sought Higgs boson particle.

Hype. Just like my original statement "implies"

Yeah, you're right. Scientists don't have any idea what they're talking about.

We should execute them with our magical guns.

With the evidence of FermiLab (which didn't quite get to the certainty of CERN, it looks pretty real.

Here are some great 3-5 minute videos about the Higgs from Sci Show within the last year.

Sci Show also has some great short videos on the 4 Fundamental Forces which may help mesh everything together.
