I don't understand why we can't raise taxes and cut spending simultaneously.

There isn't a reason we can't. The problem lies in the idea that it's likely we will do the first and not the second.

Because they (gov't/politicians) never keep their word and cut spending, but they are constantly keeping their word in raising taxes and fees and penalties and permits and licenses etc etc etc

I have always said, if they prove they can cut spending, then I will be the first to willingly pay more taxes. A lot of other people would too.

Faith is an amazing power, especially when people honestly believe the government is doing the right thing. People would have faith in the government again, and I would bet there would be far less partisan bickering as well.

I say we give it a go. I don't think we've tried it recently, and, if this is a US only thread, Conservatives will surely support the return to 19th Century economic values.

I remember a special on TED that addressed the lessening faith in government....according to them, it all gets tied back to Nixon.
