Yeah, becuase we all get to choose our surnames!

Someone took that surname for himself otherwise his ancestors wouldn't wear it. Actually not just someone, a lot of people has chosen that as surname. And I'm sure there are people in our age who legally change their surname to "King" because they have such a huge inferiority complex.

Ermm, given Rodney King's likely family history, it's probable that his antecedents were assigned that surname by their owner.

Doesn't matter much. My point still stands. People have and still do chose "King" as their surname! I don't care much if rodney's ancestors chose it themselevs or if it was given. But who'd name their slave "King"?? It's probably self taken.

An interesting way to mark the occasion of Rodney King's death, Gillipig. I guess I can understand those who find him a major figure in history, and I can sort of understand those who would like to see him forgotten. I don't really get the impulse to make him out to be a monster though.

What pushed you to make that comment?

Ask my psychologist ;). I'm really not trying to blame Rodney King for his surname. There are a lot of people with that surname who I respect or at least don't dislike, and Rodney is one of them. He just got me thinking about what an arrogant surname it really is.
I think you're looking at my post with a bit twisted glasses though. There's nothing in that text that even begins to make a caricature of him! I can understand if someone who's sensitive would think of it as a rough or insensitive way of expressing myself. But that's just me I guess.

The family name "King" was usually nothing to do with royalty. It was a title often given to the leader of various things - the chief herald might be named "King", for instance, or the boss of the city watch. It became a family name/surname in the usual way.
And people didn't name their slaves "King", it was simply that the name of the owning family was applied to all the slaves they owned.
I have no idea whether this is relevant to anything, I suspect not - I would imagine that the number of people who have chosen their last names, barring those in the enertainment industries, is remarkably small since around the fifteenth century.
