there's no objective way of creating such a top.
in 2006 there was a national poll and a tv programme to decide the greatest 100 romanians of all time.

100 Greatest Romanians

to be honest i don't agree with many things in that top, but then you have to realise most people are idiots and they are more likely to vote for an athlete or a pop star than they are to vote for a great scientist.

as for Timminz's post, just be glad justin bieber is not in that top 10

Huh, I'd have placed money on Reagan and Washington featuring somewhere on PS's list. I would have lost. Still, I would have made money on a bet that he'd spam the thread with pictures and have difficultly counting.

Perhaps you have difficulty counting how often Bobby Jindal is on your list. Hopefully you'll have corrected your error. Still, more important than George Washington?

how about marco polo and amerigo vespucci?
also i find it odd that you selected camillo cavour instead of vittorio emanuele or garibaldi.

PS: i heard silvio berlusconi throws some wicked parties, doesn't that earn him a spot? :P

Exhibit 432 of scotty using apparently innocuous threads to push his political agenda.

HAS HE NO SHAME ???

P.S. I'm gonna give another americans a couple more shots at this. There's one american figure that should definitely be on this list, but that most people have probably not even heard about. (though I mentioned this a while ago on CC, so maybe someone remembers what I'm talking about). Also, juan, no spoilers. I think you know who I'm talking about.

I know who you're talking about but it's an urban legend. Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem, Palestine, not at the NASCAR track outside Enterprise, Alabama.

Are you saying that Palestine was a nation when Jesus was born? Some of our more right wing posters in this forum might object to that.

top 10 off the top of my head (in no particular order):

Washington
Jefferson
Lincoln
Luther King, Jr.
Teddy Roose
Franlkin
Ali
Bill Gates
John Adams
Einstein (does he count? Do they have to be American-born?)

The problem is that those who helped form the US have a disproportionate advantage. I tried spreading to love though to people like Ali, Gates and Einstein (though that's probably more of a bias).

If the standard of important is who has had the most impact on human civilization, I would name the following the USA's 10 most important figures, over Scott's list -

USA

1. Thomas Edison
for inventing the motion picture camera, phonograph and usable electric light bulb
2. Robert Oppenheimer
for the atom bomb
3. George Washington
for serving as Chairman of the U.S. Constitutional Convention (since the U.S. constitution is/was the model for most of the constitutions of the western hemisphere)
4. Benjamin Franklin
for discovering the principle of conservation of charge
5. Neil Armstrong
for being the first man on the moon
6. Wilbur Wright
for inventing the airplane
7. Louis Armstrong
for popularizing jazz
8. Theodore Roosevelt
for negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War and various military and zoological achievements
9. Ernest Hemingway
for contributions to English literature
10. Jonas Salk
for the polio vaccine

I would name Germany's --

GERMANY

1. Karl Marx
for founding Marxism
2. Friedrich Nietzsche
for contributions to philosophy
3. Friedrich Engels
for founding Marxism
4. Ernst Thälmann
for peace activism
5. Walter Ulbricht
for peace activism
6. Max Planck
for quantum theory
7. Johann Goethe
for contributions to German literature
8. Immanuel Kant
for contributions to philosophy
9. Ferdinand Zeppelin
for inventing the rigid airship
10. Sigmund Jähn
for achievements in space flight

I was thinking about going with Edison too, but figured the Tesla-boner-getters would be on my ass.

also, I was actually considering Armstrong too for a second.
