My high school had one of these in our POE class. Teenagers shouldn't have access to such things at school...haha. I wonder what's become of it now.

This isn't that new... I had a customer, a fairly small vocational school that had one of these 5+ years ago. Their model wasn't huge... but it did cost nearly $10K. The biggest change (as with many technologies) is the falling price sticker.

Seriously though, my brother and I were joking about this very thing a couple years ago--printing a gun with a full mag and the hammer cocked back with one of those. It's possible.

It's possible, but it wouldn't fire properly. They can't produce anything hard enough to create a proper firing chamber, and other essential bits of a working gun. Not yet anyway. It's really just a matter of time, though.

Anyway, there's such things as encryption and secure networks. If I really want to download a file without the government knowing about it there are ways I can do that.

ha ha again. you think your government just sit in their chairs and allow bomb recipes and pirate media to flower? they censor things that are harmful to security and they arrest people who make illegal films online. terrorist websites, megavideo etc... all blocked.

Meh, my government didn't arrest megavideo.

say you download an ak47 blueprint from the internet. how do you know the blueprint code doesn't contain a government tracking bug?

Because computers don't work that way in the real world. Arbitrary files cannot just act on their own unless you execute those files. And to execute files they need to be executable code. Blueprints are not code at all, they're data. There's a difference between code and data.

say you upload an ak47 blueprint to a website. what's to stop your government instantly forcing into the website, deleting it and then tracing the uploader (you)?

Say I don't upload it on a website. Say I torrent it and only upload the magnet link on a secure website accessible only under Tor.

Here's also a newsflash: the governments don't have the resources to monitor everyone all the time. They can't monitor even all the 360 million public websites on the internet, let alone all the sites on darknets, irc channels, p2p networks etc. Most of the time, they only monitor sites/people they already think are "suspect". They don't monitor your grandma's knitting forum.

you might think you're smart, but there is no way you can compete with the hackers who work for governments.

That's what your government tells you? They're just trying to scare you so you don't attempt to breach the Great Firewall. Don't believe the propaganda.

"I'm going to kill you!!, just let me go download Physibles for the parts of the a gun, and print them, just wait 7 days if the printer doesn't jam you'll see!!"

Remember when printers jammed every 2 sheets? Also, this thing takes forever with plastic, I bet it would take at least the same time with metal. And you would have to print every part of the gun AND later assemble it.

I haven't seen the video Andy posted tho, I might be talking out of my ass, as normal.

the point is that people will be able to assemble a gun in their own home from nothing but raw materials, once this technology advances far enough (which it will)

This needs to be in Alien IX or whatever one they're on now.

Ripley is trapped in the mail room with super-alien breaking down the door so she surfs the web for a assault rifle w/grenade launcher file and mixes up some toner and coffe creamer or something to use as powder/explosive and eff's it up.

How long from now do y'all think til it'll be in a movie? I say next summer.

No. Please don't make this thread about gun control and politics. The point is the technology is awesome, not only we will be able to print guns but it would give pioneers tools to make prototypes and inventions that will make technology advance even faster.

i wasn't trying to make this thread political. by the time the average person is able to 3d-print their own guns, if we haven't wiped out half of our own species yet, then i'd say we're doing fine. i'm not too concerned with the legality of this just yet.

People can already manufacture their own guns. People can already download instructions from the internet to build bombs. 3d-printing guns isn't that different and probably should be dealt with in a similar manner.

most bomb-making is illegal, though. unless you're hoping for 3-d printed guns to become illegal as well?
