I think we are all guessing we would land in the Roman Empire.

Right, in that case as a foreign looking woman I'll be sold in to slavery and prostitution. Not much of a chance to impart knowledge.

let me see your picture so I can tell your your chances..

I might not be a doctor, but cleanliness is far more important than people used to realize. Clean beds, boiled bandages, washing the saw before amputating the next limb would be a huge advance through most of history. Hell, even in the 20th century if they'd realized that inoculating large numbers of people with the same needle was a bad idea, we wouldn't have the AIDS problem we do.

And "zero".
And decimals.
And printing.
And steam power.
And crop rotation (might be a bit late for that one)
And the swivelling front axle. Changed the shape of roads and and fields beyond measure.
And the compass.
And where the undiscovered bits of the world are.
And the rhythm method of contraception.
And the stirrup.
Semaphore (or a version thereof).
More later, I'm sure.

Scientific method. Good answer. Didn't think of that.

The other stuff, how do you make it with materials available then and how do you use it to help people and or enslave them?

The basic battery is very simple. For creating electricity you just need magnets, copper and a waterfall. For a motor you invert the process.

Normally visionaries that see the economic advantage are the first adapters of new technology, people that have the need, and see a possible solution when sees it. So I guess you alone couldn't make any of that practical in around 10 A.D., but if you went to Augustus and told him about it he could give you the resources to make it happen. You could use the slope of the aqueducts to create the electricity!

come on read some history, egyptians had the battery oh about somewhere around 2000 years ago. clay pot with 2 magnets and copper leads.

Where do you think we got the idea from. I would say in alot of instances what we would be doing is showing them how to improve what they have.

japanese were making the best steel, chinese were making gunpowder.

The best thing we could do is show them how to mass communicate, and tell them the world ends in 2000 years if they keep fighting, but if they learn to live in peace they will become gods.

Is that why the Jews, around 900 B.C., built a bath with a diameter of 10 cubits and a circumference of 30 cubits?

I love how after posting 2 of the first 6 times in this thread, oss has no response to this (inb4 "I logged out of CC, can't I have a life?").

anyway, what incentive would I have to teach them shit? If I can't travel forward in time, what would be the point?

I wouldn't teach them anything. You know what I'd do? I'd kill Jesus. I mean, think about it, we all know about Pontius Pilot, but all he did was condemn Jesus to death.

I would kill Jesus. By suffocating him. With my scrotum.

I'd read the Quran, or bring it with me, then teleport to the past, start my Ad Campaign, recruit an army, take a city, then more cities, establish a kingdom, then an empire, and I'll be set.

If I can teleport before the beginning of Christianity, I'd read/bring the Bible. And dominate through the religious institutions, but I'd have to pick the right place of downtrodden people looking for hope and a scapegoat.

Factually incorrect- Romans did not crucify asses. There might be some evidence for early sacrifice of them that I am unaware of, but other livestock were more typical.

Hmm you may be right about the magnet part going off of memory, might have crossed something up there. pretty certain I am correct about the rest though, but getting older memory is not as good as it used to be.

As a computer scientist I'd be pretty fucked.
Perhaps I could teach them a little about probability theory and such, but besides abstract math I don't think I have anything.

Any of you guys know how to make penicilin or something?

Edit: Oh I guess I'd also know some astronomy stuff. Still not very practical.

The simple stuff is where youd succeed.

You could be a thousand times the doctor of the time, unless you werent careful and were killed for being a demon. For that matter, any who pay attention to medical and diet info, could probably rival a doctor from just 100 years ago, and certainly 200 years ago for sure, let alone 2000 years ago.

Well, most of us would be ignorant of the basic facts of life as it existed 2000 years ago so I doubt they would take our word for anything. I would introduce them to the UFC then they could all kick back and enjoy (oh, wait they they had the real thing then, gladiators, well that does it for my knowledge).

I would predict future events, become the adviser of the Caesars and then (oops, Nero was whacking off head left and right there probably would take mine too).

I would die a slave probably.

Yeah, no.. I think there are a lot of written records of how life was.... Scholars have really collected and studied the material and has given us a pretty nice picture.

Certainly cleanliness as someone pointed out before (I think it was jonesy) would suffice. But you would have to tell them why, and they might crucify you or burned you if you tell them of microscopic living organisms that inhabitated their body.

As to diet, I'm not so sure, I bet they knew better than us what was good for the body. They didn't have sugar for one. Not refined flours and all that shit.

I'm not sure that what I'm saying is correct lol, pretty sure I'm making a lot of mistakes, I'm just guessing with what I know and a little bit of common sense.

I'd probably want to be a lot like the Yankee in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, foolin' people with eclipses and dynamite.

Practical knowledge you say?

Okay, nothing for me.

Maybe if a government leader paid me enough, I could come up with new and fascinating taxes and tax collection techniques.

Long story short - Health issues with child (he's 100% okay now) + promoted = too busy for CC.
