Not surprised, but just hoping that discussions here would be as good as when I've talked to other people with whom I disagree.
I guess it really is revealing how this place has degraded.
I wouldn't agree with that conclusion, but I understand if you say that to jostle their jimmies.
The reason why this place seems degraded or less productive for such topics is that written communication alone is a difficult means for interpersonal communication.
For example, "no, you're wrong because of X, Y, and Z" as is read in written form is more likely to be subjected to a different interpretation--compared to hearing me say, "no, you're wrong because of X, Y, and Z." With written comm., the tone of voice and body language, which can placate one's message and make communication easier, is lacking.
So, what we see here is a reflection of the inherent limits of written communication. Without access to the other's body language, tone of voice, etc., we're subject to "fill in the blanks," which could easily lead to a misunderstanding, thus conflict/degradation would ensue.
