I made a suggestion to further divide off topics into "Politics" and "Science and Religion"" here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=184580
I'd like to know what others think of this.

Good idea in principle,I would prefer to see Science seperated from Religion, which would be better paired with Mythology and Folklore.

Indeed, but the thing is most talk related to science on this site, is talks about science in relation to religion, either how it is not compatible, or that it is. So the two naturally fit together in our off topics.

I would absolutely refuse to post in a forum titled "Science and Religion," as if the only thing worth discussing in that forum is which one is "right."

This suggestion comes up about once every two months or so, and every time it's roundly rejected. Do people never learn?

Speaking for the people I can tell you that no, we don't. It's a good suggestion that is continually worked against by a handful of obsessed forum goers who want chaos in the off topics.

To be fair, one of those those contain the word "church".

But yeah, bad idea and it's not gonna happen.

Lol one of those were exactly the type of thread I was refering to.If the title "Church wants to clone Neanderthals" doesn't make you understand it's about science in relation to religion, I don't know what will.
The other was not about religion, but if you look down at the posts in that thread, it doesn't take long before jonesey and others start involving god in the discussion. All threads about science gets high jacked by people who want to bring in religion, whatever their motives are.

The most active people in off-topics don't want this to happen. So it's probably not gonna happen.

It would only make off-topics smaller, more divisive and less active anyway.

Actually, I don't care. I'm indifferent. I do and have make the argument that complaining about the forum and its content is stupid when you can (a) choose not to read something and (b) post something of your own. In other words, you control the content of the forum and you control what you read. So why complain?

So that the many more who doesn't like it might pick up an interest. Off topics now is just about Religion and Politics, if those were separated from other ropics, the people who don't like to discuss religion or politics wouldn't have to have others propaganda shoved down their throat whenever they visit the off topics. Which not coincidently would make them more interested in visiting off topics. Besides, the religion nuts and the politics nuts would still get to discuss what they want to discuss, just not shove it down other peoples throats all the time. They scare people away from the off topics.

I haven't done a scientific study about it if that's what you expected lol. What is it that you doubt? That the majority of the off topic threads are about either religion or politics? That the majority of people don't like to have others political and religious propaganda shoved down their throats? That they leave when they can't get away from that? That they would be more interested to use this part of the forum if they didn't have to be put through that anymore?

How do you define "shoved down their throats?"
Why can't they get away from it?

There are multiple threads on evolution and the Bible. I don't read them. Does this mean I've succesfully achieved the apparently difficult ability to not read peoples' posts? Do I get some kind of reward from you for that? It appears that you (and an apparent host of others) have not been able to accomplish this task. Do you need some tips? Should we form a social group to discuss how not to read a thread? We can name the usergroup "Your Mouse Button and How it Works."
