Antarctica [v.2, 5/13 update]

Postby prplmnstr on Sat May 12, 2007 12:53 am

A few mistakes already: "Transantarctic Mnts." instead of "Mtns.", "Ross Ice Shelf- 3" instead of 2.
Sorry. Still, it's a pretty awesome map.

Logistics: 34 territories: 3 players= 1 neutral, 4 players=2 neutral, 5 players=4 neutral, 6 players=4 neutral. Obviously good for three or four player games, not five or six.
5/14: You know what? I think I'll add Berkener Island in the Ronne Ice Sheld and divide the Wilkes Tundra into Inner and Outer parts. That'll make it 36 territories, then 3 playes=0 neutral, 4 players=0 neutral, 5 players=1 neutral, 6 players=0 neutral.

Uhh, I like the idea but what is it going to look like? A simple draft would help... :?

I think he meant to put this in the suggestion topic, not to make it himself.

I've been trying to find forever what Antarctica would look like without the ice. There is supposedly land under there somewhere. It's mildly important for a story I'm writing.

Anyway, off topic. Back on topic, this is a stupid idea. Go back to watching Happy Feet and March of the Penguins and spread your penguin loving society driven propaganda elsewhere. That surfing movie better be the last one, you just made yourself my easily accessible target for all my penguin hate. I'm watching you prplmnstr... =P~

RPG Map

Postby DiM on Sat May 12, 2007 2:44 am

here is my idea. a RPG (role playing game) Map.
this idea takes full use of the new xml modifications.
it is rather simple. we have several maps each coresponding to a scene in the story. there will be several chapters each split into several scenes. also there will be quite a few bonus missions implemented in each chapter.

how does this work?

first the map is all about teams. good and evil.
there will be set srtarting points for the teams for the NPCs as well as for the monsters. yes you read it correct, there will be monsters and NPCs.

how does it function? well we have 2 teams that start on a map. the goal of each team is to advance to the next scene and then to the next and so on until the final scene where it all happens. that's where the 2 teams really meat. it is possible for the teams to battle eachother in the early scenes but only minor battles the won't be able to kill the other team until the final chapter.

as i said each scene is a different map so there will be several maps to play on. advancing to a map is done by conquering trigger locations on the map that open portals and stuff. now here is my dilemma. is it possible to have several maps at the same time? red has a map blue another one and so on? probably not so i'll stick to the teams advancing at once.

monsters and NPCs. the monsters are everywhere and mainly they are the neutral army you have to kill them to advance. the monsters have various powers and spells and protect artifacts. for example the monsters can regenerate over time, they can cast poison on you or killing them may trigger some events and sidequests.

how do the NPCs work? really easy. you see a territory with an NPC just go there and kill the troops. this territory will be non-conquerable meaning you will only be able to kill n-1 troops where n is the original number of troops. when the troops are killed you receive the mission. this will usually be something like go and kill the monsters in territory X or some quantifier mission like gather 20 troops on the gates of the castle or freeing another NPC or bringing an artifact which he will transform into a better one. when you do this the mission is complete and you get your bonus.

my second dilemma is if the game can automatically send PMs. as you probably imagine it there will be loads of text for the story for the missions for the advancement to different scenes, etc. that amount of text is nearly impossible to put into the map so i wonder if predefined PMs could be sent automatically by different triggers.

so far you are a team of heroes that battles another team through various maps doing missions to help the locals (or to harm them depending on your side) and in the end you battle with the other team to bring peace or mayhem upon this land.

you're probably wondering where do the teams get troops? how do the bonuses work? are they lost when they move to the new scene?
well this one is a bit tricky. as i said you start with 1 territory/player and with a set number of troops. each player will have a starting artifact that automatically gives them X armies per turn (depends on the scene).
other than this artifact, you will receive several others upon completing missions. the artifacts will be of 2 types army bonuses or dice modifiers.
also besides artifacts there will be spells cast by monsters or by NPCs that will work just like artifacts but for a limited time (2-3 turns).

now the really big part comes. if this ever comes out i would like to keep adding content to it. could this be possible without screwing ongoing games? i mean for example i get a new sidequest idea i do the graphics the xml and stuff and send it to lack for inspection and he inserts it into live play. and just when people thought they knew what the next scene is, BAM! they get a new map to test their wits and skills. also i'd like this extra content to be somewhat private. meaning it won't be made in the general foundry where everybody can see it but rather in a private sub section where only a few can see it and actively work on it.

would you play this?

it's a game within a game. if we can do it, then why not?

PPS: i'd like andy or keyogi to come and tell me if this whole thing is possible. the multi map thing, the pms, etc.

Funny, I was thinking about the possibility of adapting RPG here the other day :D
Well it sounds cool but that's surely a lot of new features to apply at once, I wonder if we'd ever see half of them
My idea was more a sort of weird tourney with a Game Master giving goals/events/rewards to the players and well, pretty much all would happen in roleplay.
Of course it would be already awesome to be able to set starting positions for players and neutral armies to make it work...
The idea of a different map for each team is great too. If I recall well a fog of war option is already considered, that might be applied to this concept.

indeed the map is totally based on new xml features. without them is totally impossible. that's why i did not start doing anything until i know it is possible.

also i need two more things for this project. to recreate the movement of the heroes i need special attacks. meaning you attack from zone A to zone B with 10 troops. you conquer zone B without losses and move everything there without leaving 1 troops behind. now you have zone B with 10 troops and zone A neutral with 1 troop or even 0 depending if that zone is considered a regenerating zone for monsters.

i also need the cards to be different. instead of the cards having the territory names, the card names will be taken from a special set list in the xml and they will be resources for spells. the spell recipies will be in the xml but they will be hidden. it's up to the player to discover combinations. try toad slime and eye of nute and you might get nothing but wait one more turn and get lizard tongue and you'll create Lizard imunity meaning for the next 3 turns you'll get +1 at dice when you attack lizards. this would be really neat.
also i need to set the chances for each card occuring. for example extremly powerfull spells should be scarce, and some resources should be found on only some maps.

I think I'd rather wait to see what kind of XML features we can have before forming an opinion on this concept.

I was going to do something like that based on Battle Royale the book, but then I realized I'd need 1vs1 games to make it work.

EDIT: Err, on topic.. I don't hate the idea, but people in the foundry, as I am sure you are painfully aware, get agitated at things that are complex.

i just looked at your map...it has a very strong resemblance to the ancient greece map...kinda pointless to make a duplicate of a map.

I think your talking about a lot more than mere xml changes.... but I would play it, I prefer larger epic long lasting maps anyways.

yeah i kinda got the point with my aom map but hey i like complex brain challenging games. i'm not saying risk isn't challenging but after you've played the classic for so many years you do feel the need for something new and even more challenging. or at least i do.

anyway if i made people (at least some) like aom i'm sure i could find some fans for this thing. or at least i hope so.

yep it could be impossible but that's why i'm eagerly weaiting for andy to tell me exactly if at least some parts of what i need will be implemented. then i'll see what i can do with what i've got.

and i especially like the continuous expansion for the map, new chapters can be released, new quests added. basically anybody could put his own work into this map and add even more to an epic battle. the games could last for months and still be entertaining, maybe when the games end people will feel sorry for their hero and start again. maybe some will get so attached and never end a game. who knows? only our imagination is the limit... and the xml issues :(

PS: i know i'm probably getting a bit carried away but i like to dream :)

I'd definitely play this if it were to be implemented but it sounds damn near impossible to put into this site (idk im a computer programming retard).

well at the moment it is impossible and even if the new xml will provide all the things needed for this map it will still be really really hard to pull this one.
if it were an easy task i wouldn't have bothered starting it.
