we actually live in a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC. So your wrong and very very IGNORANT.

I have previously offered this, and will extend it again ... I will buy premium for anyone who can find the phrase "constitutional republic" in any of the following documents: the U.S. constitution, the U.S. declaration of independence, the federalist papers, the minutes of the constitutional convention, or the articles of confederation. This is well over 1,000 pages of U.S. founding documents and probably shy of a million words of text and you only need to find it once to get free premium from me.

your " are wrong and your capitalization is wrong, but otherwise ok... did you forget the bill of rights? lol but it aint there either. but we do live in a there no matter what you want it to be. however you are right, that we dont really have freedom.... i guuess we should stay on topic ..ehhhh..turd

OK. You can post the passage here to redeem your prize.

Naw. A lot of people are upset to discover it's a nonsense term coined in the 1950s by Robert Welch, better known as the inventor of Junior Mints, to describe his political philosophy. He later hired a PR agency to promote it on the talk radio circuit where it's stuck and grown. That said, it is your solmen right to believe the U.S. is a "constitutional republic," a "merry monarchy," a "peppermint plutocracy," an "ewok empire," or whatever you fancy! :D Carpe diem! :P

He's another dumb thing people do:

1. view an extremely small proportion of incidents where one civilian kills another UNJUSTLY.
2. then rage about the need for gun control laws.

3. Later, they observe an extremely small proportion of incidents where a cop kills a civilian UNJUSTLY.
4. then they don't rage about the need for banning all cops (and privatizing all security).

Oh oh oh, I've got a good one dumb exchange students do.

1. Break into garages.
2. Then enjoy other people's stuff they stole.

3. Later, then enter a garage with an open door rigged with motion detecters owned by a shotgun wielding psychopath sick of people stealing his stuff while the police don't do anything.
4. Then they get dead and don't enjoy stolen stuff.

i think pimpdave has a different understanding of the word "criminals",
guess u misunderstood here something, never mind

back to the topic
as saxitoxin enlightened me of the dangerous life in rural areas,
i can understand why there are guns in the house for selvdefence,
in austria we do have alot of hunters, and they have shotguns in their house too,
just recently one psychic hunter in austria killed two policeman while they searched his car ( he was a wilderer-is that english?
killing animals he was not supposed to) he had a full arsenal of weapons in his house...

the problem is the gunlaws are for all, and the problem is that some in our society have not the responsibility
to own this guns, since they will use it not for defense but for some unlawfull action,
or kids taking the gun of his father and shooting around in schools ( we had this a year ago in germany too )

there is no 100 % guarantee that this will not happen again, sad but reality is, it will happen again somewhere, someday

i do not defend the homeowner who wanted to "defend" himselve and i do not defend the young student who broke into
someone elses garage,
lets say he walked into a strangers garage, since the garage was open???
i dont want to put blame on the exchange students guestfamily either
but if i would have an exchange student with 17 years, i would not let him run around after midnight...

besides having a gun in your house might make u think u are save,
but its not granted, and because u do have a gun could be more fatal at the end
i dont know guys, i have no idea how to make this world saver for all,
but giving guns to everybody cant be the solution either

That's hardly only a problem with "voters." It's just generally true of people -- they often make bad decisions when emotional. Lawmakers are not immune to it either -- look at the passage of the AUMF a mere three days after 9/11.

Another downside of democracy. Thanks.

If a buy something in a fit of happiness and later I don't like it, then I can return it or never buy it again. I can't return politicians and ask for my money back. I have to wait 2-4 years for another crappy offer. So, even if people make bad decisions when they're emotional, the institutional context can mitigate the negative consequences to varying degrees. With political institutions (voting, lawmaking), the consequences aren't mitigated as much; if anything, the voters and lawmakers are much more unrestrained (since the costs of their actions are much more externalized).

Rely less on politics to fix problems. That leaves people with markets and civil societies.

And be open to the 'do nothing' approach. If one problem is not systematic (e.g. the occasional German stealing stuff from a garage), then it doesn't make sense to mobilize the democratic spirits to implement changes at the national or even the State level. That tends to 'fix' one problem while creating other problems (which then tend to be addressed again through politics; repeat ad nauseum).

Well, close. IIRC he walked into the house without knocking on the door, thinking it was a friends house. And he was wearing an elaborate costume. But the clincher was it was 3 weeks before Halloween.

So yeah, you're sitting in your living room on a fall evening and the door suddenly opens and a stranger wearing bloody clothes and a mask walks in and doesn't respond to your English-language warnings to get out ... that's usually a recipe for disaster.

I found the article. They never entered the house. They were actually leaving after they rang the bell and the door didn't open, and the homeowner exited the house and shot the student point blank. He wasn't dressed in bloody clothes, he was wearing a tuxedo and it was Baton Rouge.

I have over 30....guess I muck up the stats :(

And my property is criminal free....course the sign that says "Criminals will be shot; survivors will be shot again" helps...and the big sticker on my big ol Uhmerukan truck that says "Criminals Prefer Unarmed Victims...Got Guns?"...well....you know my stance.

I love these threads
