this is something i admire, to live in a place where u dont have to lock your house, since u live in freedom,
my grandfathers house was like that, his house was never locked, i lived there until i was 5 years old.
and yes he had a shotgun too, but for hunting reasons, ( and storys say i sticked my finger into the shotgun...he catched me and told me never ever to touch his gun again )he served in the korean war, he was a tough but nice chap. he told me to close my eyes when he killed the chicken, saying i would get nightmares,
he forbid me to count the starts, i dont know why,
the only bad memory i do have is when he was beating that calve because it ran away and he had to catch it again,
i didnt like that scene.

Is it just me or does anyone else read Aslan's posts like song lyrics?

Try singing his post with this playing in the background and you'll see what I mean:

Aslan is one of my top 5 favorite posters and this is 90% of the reason.

i am not a martyr, i just get very emotional with things like that,
i do think i am a nice person and stand my moral grounds,
but believe me - sometimes i do hate my selve for beeing nice,
i cant stand it anymore, i wished i could be not nice,
i received an advice long time ago from a guy who was rich as hell,
(i mention rich as hell, since people who are rich as hell are successfull,
that means they have other instincts and follow them, with no mercy)
he said to me, aslan you are too nice, dont be nice
and today in the year 2014,
he was right, and just today i do have the legal round to be a big asshole, but i choose to let it be,

this is maybe the reason, we cant imagine,

i can really understand that there are gunowners in alaska or in wild canadian and usa places,
this is all fine, i dont have a problem with that
what disturbs me is if people use it on other people, its not good
if it where only for selvdefence, still okay
but some irresponsible psychos use it on anything and for any reason

Rely less on politics to fix problems. That leaves people with markets and civil societies.

And be open to the 'do nothing' approach. If one problem is not systematic (e.g. the occasional German stealing stuff from a garage), then it doesn't make sense to mobilize the democratic spirits to implement changes at the national or even the State level. That tends to 'fix' one problem while creating other problems (which then tend to be addressed again through politics; repeat ad nauseum).

Your 'people make 'bad' decisions when they're emotional' point swings both ways. A political system that does not let people act upon every emotional impulse they have can help to insure against emotional groundswells too.

An example that springs to mind is the UK's 'EU referendum' - the British public get all screechy and demand to leave the EU, at which point the prime minister kicks the can down the road a few years without having to worry about an immediate reprisal. This then buys time for the hysteria to die down before any serious decisions are made.

hear, hear, very true indeed,
another point of view, but true
its our politicians who make the rules, are they always in our interests and good for all
or are this politicians acting for their own good, mostly they do, in my opinion

Saxi is just playing his imaginary role here...whatever it is.

Guns have a way of turning a dispute into a killing. Fighting with your hands, feet or blunt instrument may be ugly, but may be not deadly. Cowards can always use deadly force with a gun, but would probably run and call the cops otherwise.

Yeah, go ahead and try to see how nuts that sounds. You, sir, have some serious problems in your head. Maybe a lot of anger, delusions, I don't know. But you should probably go get some mental health help from a qualified shrink.

Sure, occasionally the 'benevolent' politician makes a presumably good move--regardless of voter rage.

Here's a fun blog about a study which found that preferences of poor voters are not nearly as influential as the preferences of the richer voters:

http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/201 ... ocrac.html

In contrast, I find Gilens' results not only intellectually satisfying, but hopeful. If his results hold up, we know another important reason why policy is less statist than expected: Democracies listen to the relatively libertarian rich far more than they listen to the absolutely statist non-rich. And since I think that statist policy preferences rest on a long list of empirical and normative mistakes, my sincere reaction is to say, "Thank goodness." Democracy as we know it is bad enough. Democracy that really listened to all the people would be an authoritarian nightmare.

I'm okay with this.
