I was just reading this new study that drew some interesting conclusions about how those raised in the (US) church and have left tend to be 'further left' than those raised without any church at all. It's pretty interesting, one of the core conclusions is people who leave the church are so 'scared' of how extremist it makes its followers than they in turn tend to become extremist against the church (not against god or jesus, just the church itself as it's seen as having corrupted the core messages of Jesus/christiantity).
