<48 countries>

<A map of Former Yugoslavia, which has now disingerated into 6 countries (and two autonomous provinces), as shown.>

So what's my next step? Any comments on changes?

I like your idea. NOt to sure about your continent thought... you have three continents worth 2 men right next to each other (montenegro, kosovo and macedonia). This could be a problem as one person, as soon has he has one continent, could easily take out the other two, with nobody to stop him and once he has these it would be hard for him to lose the game as an opponent would have to take out alot of countries to rid him of any bonuses.

Maybe you should make a one way border from metobia to Polog and create a border between visitor and metobia.

I also think you need to change the colour system around, you have continents of similar colours next to each other - eg. Srpska, Croatia and Serbia.

you could make the lines dividing the countrys a little more bold and change the solid colors to something textured(still try to keep them so you can tell each continent apart from the others)

Is it just me or does Srpska have 6 border countries and a bonus of 4. That is far too low of a bonus for such an oddly shaped and hard to defend continent.

I cant imagine how to do the map without merge Srpska and Bosnia. And this would create a serious problem... 3 big continents and 4 small continents, over valored (3 countries for a bonus of 2!?)... In this case, the south part would be very strong, its a problem. Maybe you can also merge Macedonia and Kosovo.

I believe you really should think about merge some countries and continents, to make some medium continents. Maybe the classic 42 / 6 formula would work better in this map...

Marvaddin, I understand your point.
However, one reason why I made this map is because I played classic map over 100 times, and the player who takes Australia wins in majority of the games.

My point here was to make 4 'australias', so that some players wouldn't get eliminated early on, and so that everyone has an equal chance of holding their own little 'hideout'.

If other people persist I should merge, I will do it, but I don't think that's an issue.

Values I can, and actually will change.
I can also extend the mountains between Bosnia and Srpska, so that each will be more protected.

As for the odd shapes, I didn't make them up. This is how the region REALLY is divided.

First of all, when you update the map can you tell us what you did, its so annoying scrolling up and down to see the difference. I like the idea of lots of small continents and your impassable changes really improved the map.

To fix your Srpska problem I think you should incorporated Tuzla into Srpska, it would cut down the border countries from 6 to 4. It may not be right geographically but will help the playability of the continent alot.

Hi

Is Slovenia really worth 3? i would have thought only a 2 for a 4 country continent on the edge of the map - it's nearest neighbour will be difficult to control.

The white/light grey text isn't working that well, particularly the text off the coast of croatia.

Too many river crossings / small mountain ranges makes it a bit difficult to see where the natural paths for an invasion lie. I'd have to look very hard before sending a large force across the map.

I think it is worth 3 since it has 3 borders. Considering the 2 border 3 country continents are worth 2, 2 men for Slovenia would be an injustice.

Like the map serb.

Postby mighty_serb on Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:42 pm

Allright RISK takers,
I think I pretty much took ALL your suggestions, and made a totaly new map witha lot of changes.
Changes include:
-Slovenia got a province from Croatia
-Mountains between Slovenia and Croatia moved (to give Croatia less countries it needs to defend).
-Less bridges
-Tuzla went from being part of Bosnia to being part of Srpska (as suggested).
-Values changed.

Here you go, so you can compare.

As for the last comment, I am also a member of landgrab, so I tried posting the map there, etc... but I don't like that site as much.

Kool. Like the changes in the update.

I think visually you should change the position of the name Southern Dalmatia (it currently looks to me like only those islands, not that strip of land as well).

I think you spelled Bosnia wrong in your updage. It think you typed bosna (or is that how it is meant to be?).

Its highly unnesscary but if you were bored you could enter the names of all those other nations in the map (Since you named the Adriatic Sea).

Have you tested its playability on paper? I think that adding to the mountain range between Bosnia and Croatia may make getting both Bosnia Srpska once you have one of these continents too easy (not sure though so u would have to try a paper test).

good stuff - mountains are much clearer, you can see which countries connect to each other - i would personally prefer images of mountains rather than a line though...

The one way arrow connecting the southern continents - I hadn't even noticed it was there on the first map, so good improvement.

the bridges need a stronger emphasis, they are still hard to pick out.

the extra territory for slovenia is an excellent idea, more balanced in my opinion.

colours are better, don't like the texturing though - different continents should have different textures too, rather than the same for each continent.

Much time since my last continent-by-continent analysis, so here I go.

Name, countries, border countries, neighbour countries, suggested bonus
Slovenia, 5, 2, 3 ... 3 is ok.
Croatia, 10, 6, 8 ... bonus of 7 at minimum, almost unholdable. I personally would put 8. Probably Slovenia will be like an Oceania.
Bosnia, 5, 4, 6 (and Im not considering Javor is connected to Sarajevo; if so, make it clear). Very difficult to a small continent. Will probably be an wasted continent anyway, but could I suggest you add mountains between Herceg and Vrbas? One less border, bonus of 3 is ok, but maybe 4 because its really difficult to hold.
Srpska, 7, 5, 6 ... again, many borders. You should remove at least one. You can remove the bridge to Semberia, or add mountains between Tuzla and Sarajevo (you can open a passage between Sarajevo and Sutieska, if you want), or maybe both. Bonus of 5, since its an Europe almost :)
Serbia, 12, 5, 6 ... bonus of 7.
Its difficult having problems with those small continents. They are ok, but I believe you should remove the one-way arrow (these things suck, and I dont know one person that likes them) and reduce Macedonia bonus to 1.

Really, we will need better bridges  And I want to suggest more bridges in Serbia. See how difficult is go from Srem to Podrinje, for example.

But Im really worried about some big names (like West herzegovina), and even more about some tiny countries. Where will you put the number of armies to those Srpska countries? Maybe you will need change some borders, adding some land from Tuzla to Posavina, for example.

But I believe this will be a good map. :D

Postby mighty_serb on Wed Aug 16, 2006 12:20 am

Allrighty. Thanks for suggestions.

I updated ALL the suggestions, EXCEPT the different textures for each continent. The reason why I didn't do this is because there aren't enough textures for each continent, and some are totaly not suitable for risk maps. So I just kept with the same one.

Everything else that's new, you can check the above comments, but include:
-change of name of 'west herzegovina' to 'neretva'
-movment of text for southern dalmatia
-no more one way move between Metohia and Macedonia
-change of bonuses for countries
-changes in region sizes in Srpska and mountains
-one bridge added between Belgrade and Sumadia
and other changes...

oh wow! this looks like a really awesome map.

This is actually really cool, cuz my great grandpa (93-ish) who's still living imigrated from yugoslavia, and i've never really known much about the place.

Anyway, keep up the good work, the map looks awesome!

Oh that country is Italy... I was wondering what it was. So the territory in the continent Bosnia is meant to be Bosna not Bosnia? Couldnt u fit Bulgaria into the space so just put BG?

I cant really suggest any improvements for playability, it seems to be good. Now you just have to fix the visuals up a bit. The bridges and the mountains need to be spiffied up a bit.

I like it. It supports the series of historical maps we cartogtraphers are getting into. but is there anything more creative to call "eastern macedonia?"

This map is looking good and I like the multiple small continents.

But can you change the color of Bosnia or Srpska? I'm color blind and can't tell them apart.
