Russia Map Basic [Vacation]

Postby SargentFluffy on Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:08 pm

So here's an outline. The text needs to be changed. It's too big. That much I know. It's not even done... :)

Image

Or something textured...

Image

Comments? Should I add/take away anything? Gimme opinions. I'm happy to change it around if need be. I will be adding a background showing the ocean and the surrounding land, so don't worry about that part. I have a basic idea of what the bonuses will be, but I'd like other ideas too.

Wow I am very impressed by your first draft. Usually people come in here with some crappy image, but this looks pretty good. All I really have to say is that you need to add some more countries (or take away, preferably add) so that your number of countries is divisible by some number of players. What I counted was 39 countries I think. Thats not divisible by anything except 3, which means in most games there will be neutral territories. But other than that, It looks visually appealing. I think if you kept the colors of the top map with the texture of the bottom map, that might look good. Or just play around with other textures.

Thanks. :) I thought about that too. Only problem is: the only territories I could really add would be in the west, and that's already pretty full...I'm not sure how I could add eastern territories and be geographically correct...I could include some islands off the coast maybe...ideas anyone?

Country dispersion was a problem with the first Russia map that was tried. Everything got focused in the Eastern part, while the Western was left with huge countries, an unbalance.

As for trying to alleviate it, while remaining geographically correct, that might be especially hard to do. Perhaps if you look into 'states/counties/towns' that are in the East to break the larger countries into.

If you want to add some islands add the kuril islands which are sount of kamchatka and Wrangel Island which is north of Chukotsky. Maybe you should add some Soviet Union countries and change the map to that?

Edit: you could also add Sakhalin island which is East of Primorsky and Khabarovsky.

Edit 2: why dont you have ural or yakust in your map? were those countries made up for the classic map or something?

The kurils belong to the russians, and no matter how hard japan cries over them, they wont get them back.

A Russia map will be welcome. :D

Some tips (Im refering to the first image in your post):
- the gray continent should have one less border, but this is easy: dont use chitinskaya as border country.
- one less border to the red continent would be good, too.
- the green continent seems ok, but those islands are much close to Taimyrsky to dont be a border, maybe you could put them more distant.
- the 2 western continents, you cant put both names and number of armies in those countries. Also for this reason, I say from now: make a bigger image, that map is too small.
- some names are abreviations... maybe you could use better names, no need to the name of the region in fact, maybe a capitol or an important city.
- and DONT tell me you cant creat more countries in the eastern part...

And a thing I believe you could consider: make a map of the whole USSR, not only Russia.

you could be unique and instead of the ol' 48 countries, 7 continents, some 2's 3's 4's 5's and a big one : 7.

You could mingle with bonuses. Give the person holding Moscow an extra guy. Make few continents with huge bonuses, or many continents with small bonuses. Tons of countires, like 60 or .. not so many like.. 30.

The real main deal is the playability: Make sure there is no easy, surefire way of winning, or cramming a bunch unreadable territory names together.

The actual bonuses and things like that can be your idea. Some unique ideas would be welcome, since most of the maps on this site are just classic maps with different names and colors.

Wish you luck on your endeavor, tovarish

love it

Postby mighty_serb on Sun Aug 13, 2006 1:20 am

Hey I love the map man.

I'd still stick with the bottom map, I hate bright colors. I like something soothing to the eye.

One suggestion from me would be to add more mountains. You forgot to put URALS, which are pretty important.

yes. I'd thought about giving a Moscow bonus. it's a good idea I think. I'll take away the border in grey. it IS kind of a lot. move the islands? sure. bigger...can it BE bigger?? I thought I was pushing it as it is...Ural...ok. Sakhalin island...probably. :) I did have that but I thought it made grey too big. *shrug*

so should I work mainly on the textured one instead? cause it seems like that one is more popular...and yeah, I'm going to crop some blank space off. dark BG? well, the ocean on top will be darker, and the land surrounding will have kind of a 'fog' over it...

listen

Postby chetnik on Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:31 am

Don't listen to those who want a SOVIET UNION map, finish this one first. It has alot of potential.

I didn't read all the comments, but basically, I think it would be useful to have one or two small regions (since all these are large and hard to defend), something like a bonus for Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Vladivostok.

I would also add more mountains and MAJOR rivers (like Volga), as it adds to the strategy (creates more barriers). It's not a must, though it would increase strategy.

So how about do all the changes that have been suggested, and post an image?

Love it Fluffles! Looking good! :D

Yeah, Like chetnik said, the Volga would be one to most definately add, seeing as it's a pretty big landmark.

*likes the textured one*

Make sure you include Murmansk. ;)

Very nice map and Russia is a good idea to boot. Lots of provinces to choose from. Just don't put Afghanistan in Moscow. :D
