Editor’s Note

Hello, tournament fans, players and organizers.
I apologize that this comes a day late. I injured myself on Monday, but all is well now, and we can get down to business.
Some of you may have noticed that this week I was added to ‘The Team.’ This is in part recognition of the service the newsletter provides, as well as to give me a few tools to aid in bringing you quality newsletters each week. I can assure all our readers, that this will not change the content of the newsletter in any way. I still have a free mandate in this regard, so keep sending your submissions, and I will keep putting them in.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Interview with mushin
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer and player, mushin. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with keiths31. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Godd. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, mushin.

A: Howdy

Q: Why did you join CC?

A:Well, I was bored at work and I LOVE the Hasbro game that shall not be mentioned. I was looking for a way to look busy on my PC one day and I ran across CC.

Image

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: Well, once again, I was bored at work and thought I could do a good job of it. I love to challenge myself, and seeing if I could come up with an overly complicated mess then figure out what all the possible situations that could come up really spoke to me. It was kind of like putting a lot of little plastic players on a board and trying to figure out what you should do to counter your opponent while creating an advantage for yourself while figuring out what you’re going to do in 3 turns, while….wait for it…

Image

Man that feels better. Plus I’m hoping that LackAttack will offer me a job. Come on Lack...you know you want to...

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A:Not very long  the fact that you asked me to do an interview really touches me...in bad places...I'm calling the police!!!!

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: While making whoopee with my wife…have you met my wife?

God I love her. Seriously, if she asks tell her I said that, the I love her part not the whoopie part...can I start over...

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A:I am still running my first tournament. It’s been good/bad/unbelievable. I hope people are having fun. I’m having a ball running it.

It can get overwhelming sometimes to keep up the same level of commitment. There are days I want to through my laptop in the trashcan. When it gets a bit much I think back to what my football coach taught me in 3rd grade:

mushin's football coach wrote:Quit crying!!! And stick that bone back in your leg!!! Damnit..you're off the team!!!

He made me what I am today...

But seriously I love the fact that I have created something that others enjoy, cause I enjoyed making it happen. And if they don't enjoy it...welll screw you buddy!!!

I need a hug

Image

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: I have 2 that are running right now. I really like Natwolfman’s 9 ball tourney and conquerAce’s License to Kill. Both of them are very original and change the way that I play the game.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A: I love a tournament that changes the way you play CC. I want a tournament that makes me lose in order to win. Any tournament that adds a layer of depth to CC is alright with me. I always want to swim in the deep end.

Image

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I am actually playing in nothing but tournaments right now. I tried to just find games randomly, but I kept playing the same games over and over. Partly because I like certain maps and partly because I was winning on those maps. Where’s the fun in that? I LOVE to win, but the only thing better than winning is winning in a game where you had to become a better player to make it happen. Besides, fewer people deadbeat in tourneys. The few deadbeaters I’ve run across in a tournament either had something horrible happen in their real lives or stop playing tournaments fairly quickly.

gozar wrote: You mean there is life outside of Conquer Club?

mushin wrote:That's crazy talk!!! Who told you that!!! Get back to working on your divinely inspired newsletter that keeps the world rotating while the rest of us hunt down the heretics who have spoken such blasphemies!!!

spinwizard wrote: I told you we should have interviewed pjdonald again instead of this crazy bastard.

mushin wrote:I heard that

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A:HOW EXCITED WAS I !!??!!

Image

Needless to say those underwear had to go in the trash....

I'm just kidding. I put them in the wash and they're good as new.

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A:Every loss is disappointing, but getting booted from the first tournament I created in the 1st round sucked big wampum.

GANNABLE AND SHARPIE123 YOU WILL BOTH BURN IN HELL!!!!!

Whoops, sorry. I'm taking medication for that.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A:For me it is 3 things.

The Three Things That Mushin Proclaims to Signify Tournament Success

Image

1) Keeping everyone involved.
It is very easy to forget your even in a tournament. Finding a way to keep your players engaged is key. Some tourney makers send out updates, some make players constantly update the boards, and some even show up in the games making comments. Whatever method, keeping your players engaged is important

2) Make it interesting
It doesn't have to be complicated, it doesn't have to be simple. It has to be interesting. If I'm in a tourney that isn't interesting I will play my games, I'll take credit for winning it, but I might not even know what the hell is going on. If a player wishes they hadn't gotten eliminated the day after being kicked out, you ran a good tournament

3)Have a good time
If you don't have a good time then why the hell are you doing it? The odds of you winning a tournament are never good. You probably aren't going to win your tourney. It's a lot of work, even running a crappy tournament is going to be a pain in the ass, trust me. And you're not being paid for this. (Come on Lack, you know you want to give me a job, don't make me go back to making amateur porn. You REALLY don't want to see that.) You better enjoy it.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A: Amazzony's Olympic tournament series is nothing short of incredible. I seriously have no idea when that woman sleeps.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A:Well, I do two things. First I spam by joining random games and asking people I play against if they want to play and I send out advertisements to people playing in my active tourneys. Secondly, I act like an utter jackass. I make fun of anyone and everything. I think I make people laugh, if not, well I laugh and people keep joining the tourneys, so I'm going with it until I get sued.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A:It is VERY time consuming to do it right. I sometimes miss my children, but hey, I hired my old football coach to babysit so they'll be okay.

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A: Well, I like doing it. And the chicks dig it…

chicks wrote: We do?

mushin wrote:DAMNIT LET ME HAVE MY DREAMS!!!!What's wrong with my dreams?

mushin’s wife wrote:If you’re dreaming of chicks again I’m chopping off your balls!!!

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A:Starting too many tournaments at once. It’s easy to get excited and bite off more than you can chew. Just remember that anything you do, including your tournaments, won’t be judged on how they worked on the day you had your $#@* together, it will be judged by the day when everything went wrong. Better to have one really good tournament than 7 sets of “I was in a tournament?”

BOW DOWN TO THE GREAT MUSHIN’S WISDOM!!!!

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: Letting people know they've been kicked out for not showing. That was a HUGE mistake. Everyone has an excuse. If I was being paid I would love to listen to them. Unfortunately for them I am doing this for fun. They henceforth will be labled as FARGIN BASTAGES!!!
Image

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A:I try to update them every day. If they don’t need an update, then I let them go. But, again, I want to make sure my players remember they are in a tourney so I try not to let it go too long. If I don't care, why should they.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A:Well, I would love if a “take a shot of Jack Daniels when you lose an army” option was added or maybe a "Strip CC". Baring that, I would love to have a way to chose territories at the beginning of the game like in the Hasbro game that shall not be mentioned.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: Have a way for tournament organizers to pick territories for participants.

If I could do that I could probably win one of my tournaments.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Enjoy what you are doing, and take it slow.

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A:There’s really only been two major headaches.
  • People who think take what I say/quote seriously.
I must warn anyone, if you’re in my tourney I may take your name and do horrible things with it. On the flip side I will do it to my own also. And my wife, don’t forget my wife. I don’t really have a problem with people being offended, but I do have a problem with someone only being offended when it is their name that is involved. YOU FARGIN BASTAGES!!!!
  • Being accused of cheating.
I’m not sure why this bugged the living hell out of me but it did. Especially since I’d been eliminated from my tournament. Once again YOU FARGIN BASTAGES!!!!!

You people know who you are and may your feces always get caught in the hair of your nether regions.

Image

Q: Why did you pick the name mushin?

A:Well, I was in college and I was fairly pretentious.

Gozar wrote: You pretentious?!?Nooooo

I know I know, it is hard to believe. Anyway, it is a term from Buddhism that means- the state of mind where all contradictions cease and clarity takes hold.. And since I have entered it on pinball machines across America for the last 20 years, I figured I’d just keep it.

Q: Why do you put a lot of pictures in your signups (like after somebody signs up, you end up putting a lot of pictures in your responding post)?

A:Why not. Sarcasm does not come across on a post. Tones and inflections of speech don’t come across. In fact, as a communication method, posting pretty much sucks $%%. It’s fairly 2 dimensional. But I can overcome the limitations of a post by stepping outside of the format and adding pictures. Mainly I add them because they made me or my wife laugh. Hopefully they amuse you too. If not you can be added to the FARGIN BASTAGE category.

Q: Why do you always crack jokes?

A:I think it’s really easy to lose sight of the fact that Conquer Club, contrary to popular belief, is in fact a game. People take it so damn seriously. They take everything so damn seriously. Life is pretty serious. You could die, you could get cancer, the ones you love could catch herpes…and then love you… CC doesn’t even make the top 1000 of things that should be taken seriously. Yet I see people getting angry at each other or me. Hell, sometimes I get angry at others. All I want to do is play and enjoy the ride.

I remember a comedian once saying…
comedian whose name mushin can’t remember wrote:Life is a lot like cliff diving. In cliff diving you are either Grand Master Funk Champion

Image

or you’re stuff on a rock

Image

As a far as I can tell nobody here is the living dead, so we are all Grand Master Funk Champions. Maybe if I crack jokes I can remind myself and others of that fact. I'll gladly take the title of "Jackass" if you and I get to enjoy the game a little more. Plus I think everybody else on earth looks funny.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Yes sirree Bob? (Does anyone know what sirree means, and who the hell is Bob?) As soon as one of my active tourney’s is done I have one called Menage-a-Trois with Armies. Keep a look out.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A:Thank me for my time? No Gozar thank you. You have given all of us Uber Dorks our day in the sun.
