Risk I.T. [Graphic Artist Needed]

Postby Tieryn on Mon Dec 31, 2007 9:22 pm

I've got an idea for a fairly ambitious computer/IT map, including peripherals. I've done a sketch, tho I'm no artist, and obviously I'd need someone to volunteer to do the graphic design. I'm happy and able to do the xml but yeah, I can't really draw :P

The idea of course is the computer, and I may have posted this somewhere earlier but I'd like to turn it into an actual development, I like this map and want to play it :P

Essentially, a summary of the map goes as follows (to be followed up with a picture of the sketch once I get to a scanner probably later today)

There area 4 Overarching Continents - Input Devices, Output Devices, Computer, Cables.

Now the normal continents, with their territories [bracketed]

---Input Devices---
Mouse [ Body, LMB, RMB, Wheel ]
Keyboard [ LHS, RHS, Space, Arrows, NumPad, FKeys, Pgup/Pgdown ]
ADSL Modem [ Lights, Modem, Power Switch, Wireless Antenna ]

---Output Devices---
Speakers [ Left Speaker, Right Speaker, Volume Knob, Power Button ]
Monitor [ Screen, Stand, Power, Brightness, Contrast, Menu Button ]
ADSL Modem [ as above, same one ]

---No Overarching Continent---
Wall Panel [ Power Point, Power Switch, Telephone Jack, Wall Panel ]
Powerboard [ Speaker Plug, Monitor Plug, Computer Plug, Modem Plug ]
Table [ Table ]

---Cables---
Power Cables [ ADSL, Speaker, Monitor, Computer Power Cables ]
External Cables [ Keyboard (PS2), Mouse (USB), Audio Out (to Speaker), Speaker Cable (between L & R), LAN Cable, Phone Cable ]
Internal Cables [ SATA 1, 2, 3, 4, Internal Power 1, 2, 3, Heatsink Cable ]

---Computer---
Motherboard [ Mobo, CPU, Heatsink, Heatsink Power Cable, Mobo Power Input, SATA Bank, RAM Bank, Front Panel Connectors ]
SATA IDE [ SATA Bank (also in mobo), SATA Cable 1(DVD), 2(FDD), 3(HDD Master), 4(HDD Slave) ]
RAM [ RAM Bank (also in mobo), RAM stick 1, 2, 3, 4 ]
Front Panel [ FPC (above in mobo), Power Button, Reset Button, Internal Speaker ]
Peripheral Connectors [ PS2 Port, USB Port, LAN Port, Video Port, Sound Port ]
Power Supply [ PSU, Fan, Internal Power Cable 1 (to mobo), 2 (to DVD & FDD), 3 (to HDD Master & Slave)
Data Storage [ DVD Burner, DVD faceplate, FDD, FDD Faceplate, HDD Master, HDD Slave ]
Case [ Front Panel, Rear Panel, Side Panel, Top, Base ]

This is a great and familiar map I think, with lots of connections and opportunities for interesting game play. I envision big bonuses for holding say, the whole computer, but lots of smaller bonuses for the smaller continents. There are lots of connections since we are using all the cables, and making the cables a continent, and then an overarching one too, gives lots of opportunities for spread continents. Harder to defend!

Following the idea of Conquer Man, Something like adding armies to the CPU each turn might be worth considering, and starting it as neutral, but that's not necessary, maybe I should think of something different and original, anyway... That's my first idea as it stands at the moment

I need a volunteer artist who would be happy to take my basic sketch (being provided later today) and turn it into a work of art that I can code the back end to :P. Gwan, Risk IT!

A few things that need to be done differently are:

Put a 4 plug powerboard on the table, plug everything into that, have one panel on the wall that takes the powerboard plug and the phone plug.

Obviously there are a few lines that shouldnt' be there, under the modem, cause I added that in afterwards. I haven't put a printer or a scanner, frankly, I don't have them, and they're not part of the enjoyment of CC, everything else is. I think the screen should be showing the CC homepage, or possibly a randomly generated forum page each time, that would be cool.... can we do page within a page stuff? I'm not sure... lets look into it...

There are connections between some of the peripherals, ie, the mouse will be touching the numpad, I often use these two with one hand... The Right speaker would be overlapping the monitor, (just thinking in terms of gameplay rather than realworld). Cable crosses will not cause contact, ie, the speaker cable can't attack the keyboard cable. Cables can only be attacked between the items they connect.

The problem with that is there would be no territories :P

Further thoughts,

The screen would be a good place to show bonuses actually, lets ignore that "page in a page" stuff :P hah!

Analysis of internal cables:

Starting from the top: Coming from the PSU is a power cable that connects to the motherboard. There are two other cables, one connects to DVD & FDD (single territory) and a different one that connects to the two hard drives. The cables do not connect to one another, but end to end from the devices to the PSU.

There are 4 single cables that go from the SATA bank (on the mobo) to each of the 4 IDE devices. These connect the device to the single SATA bank. Each pair of devices connects by its power cable (and the top pair also by their faceplates through the front panel).

The motherboard is a single territory, that has lots of things sitting on it. It has the SATA bank, the PS2, USB, LAN, Vid and Sound cards, The RAM Bank, The front panel connectors. It also connects to the back panel and the side panel physically.

The CPU sits on top of the motherboard, the Heatsink sits on top of the CPU, the heatsink power cable connects the heatsink back to the motherboard.

The case panels all connect physically at the edges. the base also connects to the table.

Ooh, another thought... some cables might be one-directional, ie the monitor and speaker cables... and the keyboard and mouse cables?... hmm... definitely the monitor and speaker.

i think this would be very interesting to play. ive actually had that idea before... oh how i thought i could be a cartographer when i first started playing cc... just never thought of how to implement it, but your idea so far seems pretty legit. keep it up and i hope you find an artist.

So are you looking for a more realistic look (ie. photoshopping a pic of a computer setup) or do you want a more drawn/sketched look... I could see something like a black and white line drawing that looks like an instruction manual... A style like this that i just found on google image search Image

I'm new around here but I'd love to collaborate... I could do the image work if you want to do the coding... This looks like it has a lot of potential and could be a lot of fun...

Sounds great, I'd be happy to collaborate :D

I was thinking perhaps starting from a photograph could be a good start, especially for the motherboard parts, although everything could be moved, and we would just use it as a basis.

If you want, I can organise some photographic starter points, and you can stylise from there? Or have a look around for more realistic pictures to start with. Look up some pictures of motherboards so you've got the right idea from them.

I think the photo of a setup would be a good start. I can organise such, I'll set up a photo shoot that we'll begin from? or if you can find other stuff.. let me know.

Great idea, and with how many computer geeks are on this site, I'm surprised that it hasn't been made yet. I think you have a great start on gameplay, so hopefully someone with artistic talents can jump on board.

We need something less abstract to go off of. Find a prettier simpler way to explain this idea and an artist may find it and be interested.

First things first, it's looking like I'm officially on board... I'll be posting a flowchart/layout later on today to make the idea a bit clearer.

Edit: Ok this is really crappy and was done in 10 minutes so no... this is not supposed to look anything like a computer, this is just a general sketch of where connections will be. I've gotta finish the motherboard components but this'll give people a little bit better of an idea of the layout...

Image

PS. Is there a specific spot for the surge protector that people had in mind? I was thinking of one of those under the monitor things but that area is going to be a mess of cables... And yes, there will be more subcomponents to things like the DVD burner, HDDs, etc.

PPS... Forgot to plug in the modem... damn...

The cabling is going to be a mess for this one, but the important thing is going to be colouring it all properly, and sorting out a minimum of overlaps. We should probably come up with a standard for where the armies will go on a cable (as I suspect in the middle will not be feasible or pretty). Perhaps nearest the computer for cords, and nearest the plug for power cables. I'm going to get some photos later this week to give us an abstract to work from, and I'll try and get the cabling nice in that.
