From 2000 - 2009 The Texas Longhorns have
  • A win % of 76.5% on the road or at a neutral site (leads nation)
  • At least 10 wins in the last 9 years (longest current streak in the nation)
  • A overall regular season record of 110-18
  • Won 2 Big 12 Championships (2005, 2009)
  • Won 3 out of 4 BCS bowls (lost last night to Bama)
  • Won 4 out of 6 non BCS bowls (overall 7 out of 10 in bowls 70%)
  • Finished the year ranked in the top 10 Six times and top 25 the other four times
  • Averaged 37.6 points per game (2nd to Boise State)
  • Had 13 first round draft picks in the NFL
  • Developed the NCAA's most winningst QB (McCoy 45-7 not counting bowls)
  • Had 2 players that were Heisman contenders (VY, McCoy)

I'm not arguing they've been good. But I'd have a hard time considering them for #1.

The top-3, for me, would be Florida - USC - tOSU (in no particular order). And I'd probably rank Oklahoma #4. Had Texas pulled it out last night I think they would have easily been in the discussion for #1.

Hopefully Gilbert gained enough experience and inspired enough confidence around him last night to continue the Horns legacies for years to come. With all things considering around McCoy and his injury I couldn't have asked for a better game. I watched the game with a true Bama fan (not a wannabe like Colton) and we both gave each other the respect that was deserved after all was said and done.

And after McCoy's injury my phone did not ring with my friends calling to banter the issue until the beginning of the half after they announced McCoy not coming back. Just goes to show you the respect that they held for McCoy and the Texas offense. They knew we wouldn't be out of it until it was 100% that he wouldn't be there. And even after that Gilbert was able to put us in a position to win with 3 and a half minutes on the clock and down by 3 with the ball he fumbled inside the bama 5 and the game was set. Great game.

More or less agree with the sentiment

2000-2009. In the end, I decided not to base it on National Championships and I kind of wanted to give it to Boise but couldn't actually find a good enough reason to vote them in. Florida only really came on after Urban was hired and was fairly consistently the 3rd best in the east before that so that eliminated them from my list. USC, I thought about and probably should have considered more closely but with Texas beating them I felt I couldn't give it to them. LSU played consistently well fro most of the decade and did win 2 National Championships, however the national buzz was never as much for them as some other teams. Georgia won their share of SEC Championships but they were well out of contention for anything national as they never really did do anything on that level. So it basically left Texas on the list.

Florida didn't come on till the latter half. OSU seemed more famous for losing championships by the end of it than winning. Plus major BCS losses. USC had the same amount of National Championships as Texas but fewer wins. They may have had more buzz but I don't think it would have qualified them over Texas.

I hope you aren't one of those people who aren't giving credit to USC for two NC's...

Anyways. Sure USC had less wins but they beat Texas in almost everything else that Sam listed:
- BCS appearances (7) with 6 victories. They also happened to be consecutive which is a record.
- National Championships (2)
- Conference Championships (7). These were also consecutive.
- Heisman winners (3)
- 7-straight top-4 seasons
- 7-2 overall bowl record

Really the only thing that USC has against them in this debate is the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Because of those seasons, the debate exists. Had USC been coached by Carroll back then, we'd be talking about three teams for who was number 2.

Texas wasn't even the best team in their conference for 8 out of 10 years.

I think this statement just goes to show you the strength of teams in our conference and hurts your argument.

Year------Coach------W-L-T---Bowl game appearance
2000---Mack Brown---9-3-0----Lost to Oregon 35-30 in Holiday Bowl
2001---Mack Brown---11-2-0---Beat Washington 47-43 in Holiday Bowl
2002---Mack Brown---11-2-0---Beat LSU 35-20 in Cotton Bowl
2003---Mack Brown---10-3-0---Lost to Washington State 28-20 in Holiday Bowl
2004---Mack Brown---11-1-0---Beat Michigan 38-37 in Rose Bowl
2005---Mack Brown---13-0-0---Big 12 champ, BCS champ;
------------------------------------Beat USC 41-38 in Rose Bowl
2006---Mack Brown---10-3-0---Beat Iowa 26-24 in Alamo Bowl
2007---Mack Brown---10-3-0---Beat Arizona State 52-34 in Holiday Bowl
2008---Mack Brown---12-1-0---Beat Ohio State 24-21 in Fiesta Bowl
------------------------------------missed Big 12 champ and NC bid by .128 points
2009---Mack Brown---13-0-0---Big 12 champ;
------------------------------------Lost to Alabama 37-21 in Rose Bowl

By the way the 2005 NC game against USC is still the best title game I have ever seen

Don't forget, it was also at the site of the biggest joke of the BCS: the fact that USC gets to play a championship game (or regular BCS game) at a virtual home-site. That Texas championship was a road game, not at a neutral site. Take USC out of their home Rose Bowl, and they wouldn't be in the debate for the top college team.

The Ohio State double overtime upset of 2TD favorite Miami
was a BCS NC that rivals any bowl game for drama too.

LSU has also been an awesome team with two National Championships.
Florida whupped up on an overachieving Buckeye team that was a real
surprise to even make it to the big dance.

I really don't see any of these Champions as the best... they are all
great teams. The what have you done for me lately theme lives on.

The Boise State/Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl upset was just a fabulous display
of how good this game can be. An amazing comeback dashed by some
equally amazing plays by a talented, well coached team, including a double
overtime climax courtesy of a perfectly executed two point conversion.

Yea. USC is awful. 1 loss to an out of conference team "on the road" since 2002 (including two Orange Bowls and one Emerald Bowl). That one loss? Kansas State in 2002.

Texas is the only other OOC loss that USC has since then - whether at home or on the road. That includes two trips to SEC territory, one to Ohio State, biannual trips to Notre Dame, out to Va Tech...

And I assume there's no problems with LSU playing in the Sugar Bowl (2002, 2004, 2007) or any Florida team playing in the Orange Bowl (2001, 2002, 2004, 2006)?

In my opinion I applaud USC for its traveling during the season games. Yeah its unfortunate for their opponents that the Rose Bowl is in their back yard but as Bones said that can be said for numerous teams and the location of the bowl the get bidded.

On another note how often does Florida go past Louisiana?

An overrated Buckeye team yet back before the game everyone on the air and everyone i knew who wasn't an SEC fan and even some who were were talking about how Ohio State was going to pummel Florida. Actually the obnoxious criticism about how it should be Michigan-OSU for the NC that year is part of the reason I'm trying not to be an obnoxious SEC fan because I don't want to sound like that.

USC is an amazing team and I'm not trying to sell the short but you can't honestly expect me to buy into their worming their way into splitting a championship for two or that their 1 national championship with less wins than Texas is better than Texas' 1 national championship with more wins than USC.

Worming their way in? USC was ranked first in both polls and still sat out. Oklahoma didn't even win their own conference and got to go to the NC to be destroyed by LSU. The BCS formula was changed the very next year BECAUSE of this. USC fans have nothing against LSU fans (which I still have no idea why LSU fans so bitterly hate USC for some reason)... we hate Oklahoma. They didn't belong anywhere near that game.

If wins are all that matter to you, then go for it.

But I'll stick with the team that has won almost four times the amount of Conference Championships, two times the amount of National Championships, almost double the amount of BCS invites, double the amount of BCS bowl wins, and 3 more Heisman winners. And the stat that still surprises me: 7 straight top-4 finishes. Can you find another team this decade that even finished in the top-4 seven times... let alone consecutively? And when you consider this was done with OOC games @ Ohio State, @ Notre Dame (five times), @ Va Tech, @ Kansas State (back when they were ranked), @ Auburn, @ Arkansas... USC isn't afraid to go out and prove it either. Not to mention never playing a non-FBS opponent for a free win.

Those last two comments were more a dig at SEC teams than Texas as I could only find 1 or 2 examples of Texas playing a Div-2 team. I've always been a fan of how Pac10 and Big12 teams schedule their OOC games.

Possible good news for Georgia. There have been rumors that Kirby Smart, the Def. coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide has been in talks with Richt about potentially taking the Georgia Def. Coordinator position with a substantial raise.

The MWC wins the Bowl Championship Trophy for the 3rd year, beating out all the other conferences. Oddly enough, 2 of those years were when Wyoming went to a Bowl game and won (2204 Las Vegas Bowl, Cowboys beat the Bruins, and 2009, Cowboys beat the Bulldogs).

Any time a conferenece has an extra team go to a bowl and win it greatly increases their chances. for instance, the SEC probably wouldn't have gotten 6 wins if they hadn't sent 10 teams to bowl games.
