The point of the statistic on spending on the war was meant to do a few things.
Put this huge waste of taxpayers money in perspective. Don't want to argue about whether the war is a waste of money but even still it puts your spending into perspective.

This isn't an issue. This is a Gotcha! moment from the conservatives. Yes, Presidential trips cost money. However this was hardly a thoughtless holiday but seems to establishing diplomatic relations just as actual Presidential visits do. Also it seems to me that the spending was partly to foster the image of American superiority. Doesn't this trip serve as America's status of wealth and power to the world? Or at least Spanish people?(or would you prefer that your Presidents wife is seen in some 3 star hotel?)

Some things levelled at this holiday are true and could merit discussion. She could've gone on holiday in America for example to the Gulf. Obviously it was decided that a holiday in Spain would be more beneficial(reasons above). I wouldn't mind a discussion of the pro and cons of travelling abroad instead of locally. I definitely mind this being treated like a very serious issue with conservatives climbing on top of their soapboxes.

Ahhh. Before another spanish-american war breaks out. Gotcha.

Isn't that everything you're mandated to despise?

Yea, Iliad, I gotta disagree with a lot of that.

I couldn't care less if she was caught shopping at the dollar store. When there are people suffering in this country, and you are THE PRESIDENT'S WIFE, this isn't something you should be doing.

It really seems like a slap in the face.

Sure, it's a gotcha moment from conservatives...no argument at all. It's also absolutely an issue.
Iliad wrote:Yes, Presidential trips cost money. However this was hardly a thoughtless holiday but seems to establishing diplomatic relations just as actual Presidential visits do.
What diplomatic relations were established here?
Iliad wrote:Also it seems to me that the spending was partly to foster the image of American superiority. Doesn't this trip serve as America's status of wealth and power to the world? Or at least Spanish people?(or would you prefer that your Presidents wife is seen in some 3 star hotel?)
The whole trip was made to unofficial purposes. So using government funds to do it is the discussion here.

It's only a "not important issue" if you don't mind burning $75k of taxpayer money on a vacation. I mind that.

INSIGNIFICANT???????? This is the worst economy in my lifetime. Insignificant? I think not. Of course this is coming from someone who pays taxes. Maybe those who don't pay taxes think this is INSIGNIFICANT! :x

Yes, because conservative politicians are never loose with taxpayer funds.

Well then, I suppose you need to live longer. While the unemployment is exceptionally high, inflation is wonderfully low. In my lifetime the "stagflation" of the Ford/Carter administrations were generaly worse than they are today, although I am not complaining because as a college student I completely abused the system getting student loans with a rate BELOW that of inflation at the time.

You have a point but let me also add interest rates on savings are dookie and there are unprecedented level of taxes and "fees."

and, exactly the same reason why I's and R's voted for Obama. Conservatives know the republicans dropped the ball. I have always considered myself independent, but the leftism I see now AND I saw under Bush nudges me to the right by default. At least I respect the conservatives for admitting it was a problem and they did not practice what they preach (the does not mean they would vote for John Kerry!) and welcoming the Tea Party as a direct response to out of control FEDERAL spending.

Oh yeah, and what I wanted to originally post, Obamas Vacation....AGAIN?

Far be it from me to defend Jay, but...how is that relevant?

Maybe because AAFudge knows jay is a prison guard (right?) and he's trying to prove a point that the state is giving him the money in the first place?

I think?

That doesn't show any relevance to being outraged at excessive government spending unless one believes that prison guards would fall under "excess"...which I seriously doubt AAFitz believes (I hope not, certainly).
