Well, close. IIRC he walked into the house without knocking on the door, thinking it was a friends house. And he was wearing an elaborate costume. But the clincher was it was 3 weeks before Halloween.
So yeah, you're sitting in your living room on a fall evening and the door suddenly opens and a stranger wearing bloody clothes and a mask walks in and doesn't respond to your English-language warnings to get out ... that's usually a recipe for disaster.
I found the article. They never entered the house. They were actually leaving after they rang the bell and the door didn't open, and the homeowner exited the house and shot the student point blank. He wasn't dressed in bloody clothes, he was wearing a tuxedo and it was Baton Rouge.
