This week we take a look at the dreaded TOURNAMENT DEADBEATS! Specifically, how some organizers tackle this problem.
Question for Experienced TOs, Re: Deadbeaters...
jpcloet wrote:I'd start by having a pm conversation with that player.
Hey I noticed that you missed some turns last time.........what's the deal? Will you be able to fully commit to this tournament.......if not, please consider removing your name from the sign up list ......etc.
barterer2002 wrote:I will always give second chances, Most people who are deadbeating out aren't going to want to join the next one anyway but if they sign up I'll allow them in.
EagleofGreenErth wrote:If I get unpleasant people in my tourney, then they will not be allowed into future tourneys. End of story, no exceptions.
There seemed to be a range of opinions from disallowing them, to giving them second chances to ignoring their history. Many organizers, many styles.
The 'Tournaments' forum will soon reach its 200,000th post

This week we had the opportunity to interview coded. All questions were submitted by readers of the newsletter. Next week, we check in with one of the other organisers, Lindax.
You can submit your questions in this thread.
Now, on with the interview!
Q: Hello, coded.
A: Hello Gozar
Q:What makes you interview worthy?
A:I am honored to be chosen to be interviewed. I think I was chosen for my approximately 30 tournaments I've completed or am running right now.
Q:How did you find this website?
A: My good friend introduced me to this site.
Q: Why did you join CC?
A:My first experience was great. Fun games with a diverse amount of maps.
Q:Whats your motivation (or why do you like) to play on CC?
A: There doesn't seem to be an end to the number of goals to accomplish on CC. When I finish one, there's always more for me to try.
Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?
A:The casual games were getting boring. I wanted to try something different.
Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?
A: I looked through the forums one day and decided I could contribute to CC by running tournaments.
Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?
A: It's been a while. I don't quite remember but I know it was fun to do so.
Q:What tournament did you first run?
A:"World Maps 1v1 Tournament"
Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?
A: Natewolfman was an inspiration when I first started and still is today. Nowadays I make tournaments that I personally would find interesting in hopes others would too.
Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.
A: The first tournament i played in was abandoned very quickly, so I decided to be a better organizer than that and make sure mine were not.
Q:Tell us about your overall tournament experience from when you first joined a tournament to the present day. How has it changed for you? Is it a better experience than before? Worse?
A: The tournament forums have definitely changed. Much more are being run. I'm concerned that many are not well organized and will turn people off of tournaments. I also believe that the influx of new organizers is a good thing though as new ideas circulate.
Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?
A: I've run around 30 and I'll run them as long as I'm still on CC and have the time. I'm running around 7 right now. At my peak, I had 15 or so running at a time.
Q:What tournaments have you organized?
A: Around 30, currently have 26 I've been credited with a medal, but a few have recently finished.
Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?
A:"Speed Doodle Assassin Tournament"
Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?
A: The two at a time tournament was really fun because the competition was great.
Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?
A:I prefer to run tournaments.
Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite? What about other peoples' tournaments?
A: People tend to join the small tournaments that fill quickly and are fast hitting. Many of mine cater to these people and tend to fill up fast. My personal favorite are short ones also.
Q:Are you selective about which types of tournaments you join or do you join just about everything you can fit into your personal game load? If you are selective, do you look for certain styles or organizers?
A:I look for experienced organizers who I know won't abandon randomly. I tend to stay away from long ones also because I don't know if I can commit for that long.
Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?
A: It's a lot easier to choose the settings because game creation is a lot easier, but I have a few that let them choose.
Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?
A: I don't play in a lot of tournaments because I don't know if I can handle the game load.
Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?
A: I've played a lot of risk before on a board and beat my friends a lot, so my win wasn't too exciting for me.
Q:If you had to win one tournament that you are currently a part of which would it be and why?
A:Prime's Singles Championship II because i need the premium membership before my current one runs out.
Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?
A: My finals lost in the "Two at a Time" tournament where I missed a kill due to some bad dice. Winning the tournament would've won me premium membership.
Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?
A: One where the players had fun and the winner is not disputed.
Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?
A:Speed Doodle Assassin Tournament because of the large number of games played and players who joined.
Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?
A:I'm always pretty happy with my own tournaments. The ones I've entered that were abandoned were disappointing though.
Q: What makes a successful organizer?
A:One that looks out for the players in their tournaments.
Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?
A:A lot of my tournament's players are regular players. If the players know that you run good, consistent tournaments, they continue to join them.
Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?
A:Game creation is very tedious.
Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?
A: Seeing good competition in my tournaments.
Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?
A: Starting tournaments that are way bigger than they can handle.
Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?
A: I've started a tournament when I wasn't able to finish it and I regret doing that.
Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?
A: I believe the organizer needs to have integrity and no rules should be placed in regards to this issue.
Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?
A: I wait til the games are completed and just send out the next round games when needed.
Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?
A:I do not believe they should because they might not come back or turn out to be a multi later on. I personally don't allow them, but it should be the choice of the individual organizer.
Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?
A:I use reserves in the first round and just give byes after that. I almost never have this type of problem though.
Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?
A: I would remove all players who cause trouble. These people are a small fraction of total players and the loss of them would be much welcomed with a lot more people joining.
Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?
A: I would like to see a tool to mass make games, or a system to automate it.
Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?
A: Tournament making is rewarding and fun. The initial frustration will disappear quickly if you push through.
Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point
A: I really don't think I have that many. I think I only have 2, which are no shows, and tedious game creation.
Q:How much time does CC take from your day?
A:CC's a pretty addicting site, so I'd say around 3-5 hrs a day.
Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?
A:I'm not a member of any active clans at this moment and am looking for a good active one, but I'm a member of the Jesus Freaks and Tournament Organizer's Usergroups.
Q: Why did you pick the name coded?
A: I don't remember exactly. I think it was a just a name off the top of my head when i signed up.
Q:Where are you from?
A:West coast, United States.
Q:Favourite play colour?
A:I really don't have one, but green/slate annoy me because they're too close and hard to tell apart in split second speed game decisions.
Q:Favourite and least favourite map?
A:Favorite: City Mogul for its very un-dice dependent games. Least Favorite:
Q:Favourite settings?
A: Doodle Earth, 8 players, Escalating, Freestyle, Unlimited, No Fog, Speed
Q:Freestyle or sequential?
A: I play a lot of speed games and 1v1, so I prefer freestyle in those because they take less time and are a lot less dice dependent. I'm trying to move on to a little sequential team games and 6-8 man escalating games however.
Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?
A: I want to complete my "Around All CC's Maps" series to complete all maps. I also have several other series going and have many others planned. They'll be available to join in the forums soon.
Q:How does it feel to be interviewed?
A:I am honored to be chosen to do and interview for this newsletter.
Q: Any parting shots?
A: Thanks to all players who continue to join my tournaments.
Q: Thank you for your time.
A: Thank you too.
